DENVER – A homeowners association in southwestern Colorado has threatened to fine a resident $25 a day until she removes a Christmas wreath with a peace sign that some say is an anti-Iraq war protest or a symbol of Satan.
Some residents who have complained have children serving in Iraq, said Bob Kearns, president of the Loma Linda Homeowners Association in Pagosa Springs. He said some residents have also believed it was a symbol of Satan. Three or four residents complained, he said.
The subdivision’s rules say no signs, billboards or advertising are permitted without the consent of the architectural control committee.
Kearns ordered the committee to require Jensen to remove the wreath, but members refused after concluding that it was merely a seasonal symbol that didn’t say anything. Kearns fired all five committee members.

This Bob Kearns sounds like a real douchebag. “Some of our residents have children fighting in Iraq” he says. Yeah so why should they be offended by someone who is just trying to get those peoples kids home? Answer: They won’t be, Bob Kearns is just a typical fear addled Repbulican idiot who still thinks it 2002. The panel votes 5 to nothing against him, so he fires all 5 panel members. What a power mad a**hole. I guess he has been taking lessons from the Bush Boy. I see a court battle coming out of this one. With old Bob losing big time, Freedom of speech anyone?

As the president of a homeowners association, I was appalled by both the initial reaction of Bob Kearns and then the firing of those who disagreed with him.
It’s people like him who give a bad name to homeowner association boards. He seems to have forgotton two minor points. First, the Constitution provides for freedom of expression and second, his job is to represent the community, not behave like a dictator.
He does not have to personally like the wreath but he should be a stalwart protector of the homeowner’s rights.
He failed as a board president, as a neighbor and as an American. Shame on him. He should be removed from the board as there is no place for him in any position representing others.
