NYC mayor disturbed by deadly shooting

NEW YORK – Mayor Michael Bloomberg weighed in on the uproar over a deadly police shooting Monday, saying bluntly that officers appeared to use excessive force when they fired 50 shots at an unarmed man in a confrontation outside a strip club hours before his wedding.
“I can tell you that it is to me unacceptable or inexplicable how you can have 50-odd shots fired, but that’s up to the investigation to find out what really happened,” Bloomberg said at a news conference after meeting with elected officials and community leaders
Of the victims, Bloomberg said Monday: “There is no evidence that they were doing anything wrong,” referring to everything leading up to the moment they struck the officer with their car.
An undercover officer walked closely behind Bell and his friends as they headed for their car. As he walked toward the front of the vehicle, they drove forward — striking him and an undercover police vehicle, Kelly said.
The officer who had followed the group on foot was apparently the first to open fire, Kelly said. One 12-year veteran fired his weapon 31 times, emptying two full magazines, Kelly said.
H.L.s Take:
How come I knew the guy that was killed was black even before I read the story??
So they were doing nothing wrong, walking to thier car with a plain clothes cop following them, so as far as they are concerned nothing is happening. But then they decide to crash their car into the cop, and his unmarked car prompting the cops to fire 50 rounds at the unarmed men. Yeah that makes sense.
Of course in the end the cops will be cleared of any wrong doing just like they always are. It’s time to take a page from England, and stop allowing cops to carry guns. They so obvioulsy can’t be trusted.

Let me start by saying I am a black man who lives in Jamaica Queens and was raised in Flatbush Brooklyn. I have been listing and reading the comments posted on the Blog and I felt I needed to comment. In regards to the shooting it is a tragedy. A family lost a father, a son and a husband to be. There is no bringing him back. Do I feel this was because of racism? No. Right now it looks like a fatal misunderstanding. The males in the car felt in fear for there life and there reactions caused the cops to fear for there life. What need to be looked at is the tactics used.
In retrospect this type of incident has happened twice in seven years. Both incidents have gotten tons of media and political attention. Activists are coming out the woodwork, each one trying to get camera time. Where is all this attention when young black men are getting shot down everyday by other young black men? Where are all the rallies where was the rallies when that man was shot in the back on his way home from work or the male who was shot and killed after he left the ATM. We need these activist and political leaders out there on the streets of minority neighborhoods fighting to stop the violence within not just there for the camera time.
And to conclude my statement, if we don’t wasn’t the cops being so proactive in our communities we need to start. Ger rid of this “STOP SNITCHING†mentality. We are the worse when it comes to following through. We don’t show up in court and we never see anything. This is why criminal thrive in are communities. We have to stop protecting them. If the cops stopped there pro-active police work in our communities it would become a killing ground. Maybe then we will have a rally or a mass funeral.

First off HL everyone has pretty much figured that the officer that fired the 31 rounds will more likly than not serve jail time. As for the officer that got the whole thing started they say that he heard them get into a confrontation with a group of other black men and heard one of them say to go to the car and get his gun. Wether you want to believe that or not is up to you but you are no better than the camara hungry Activists by saying that the cops will get off on this one to. Maybe before you start accusing someone you should make sure that you have all the facts. You talk about all the rights that Bush is taking away from us and yet you are doing the same thing that you accuse Bush of. Or have you forgotten that you are innocent until PROVEN guilty.

Just be a black man and it’s a different set of rules. You don’t need guns, just be black and the percentages of being shot by a cop go up. Where are you Cinque?
