Late, Late Night FDL: The End
The Doors – The End

The Doors – The End

As we wrap up another Memorial Day Holiday, the most fitting way to honor our Fallen Comrades would be to end the senseless and wanton wars that we’re currently mired in…!

What’s on your mind tonite…?

The Traumatic Duo
Apparently, alleviating even temporary suffering, is beyond the realm of government…unless it affects the officials directly. The “Trent Lott’s Porch Doctrine”.

via monkey_bob99x at flickr.com

Oh how lucky for the citizenry to see a fantastic pair of federal and local officials not really caring!

?

Today on CBS’ Face the Nation Cantor doubled down on using the tornado victims as political hostages for spending cuts to clean energy. He compared the situation to that of a family facing an unexpected expenditure.

Eric Cantor apparently comes from the kind of family that will not spend the money to get their dog spayed only to later go on to drown the resulting puppies. Sure it is somewhat motivated by being cheap and short-sited, but mostly for the thrill of possibly killing puppies.

Cantor has a kindred spirit in a small Alabama town of Cordova devastated by a recent tornado:

A mayor in a small town devastated by a tornado has sparked outrage over his refusal to let homeless residents stay in trailers provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency…

Mr Scott, however, has heard all the complaints but is unrepentant.

He said: ‘I don’t feel guilty. I can look anyone in the eye.’

So residents who lost their homes are out-of-luck, but the Mayor and city officials? They get to use the same, otherwise banned trailers.

Mr Scott defended that decision by saying the city can use small trailers because it is for the common good.

As opposed to unfortunate citizens getting a roof over their head. I guess it’s the “Trent Lott’s Porch Doctrine”.

Obama Approval Continues to Climb

Obama Approval Continues to Climb
A new CNN/Opinion Research survey finds President Obama’s approval rating has steadily risen over the past two months, from 48% in early April to 52% in early May and the current mark of 54%.

Notes pollster Keating Holland: “On specific issues, the president’s approval rating is over 50% on only three out of 11 items tested, and all three — terrorism, Afghanistan, and Iraq — are foreign or security issues. But his approval rating on every domestic issue listed in the poll is well below 50 and on most of them — including the economy, health care, taxes, and the budget deficit — his rating has remained flat or dropped since the start of the year.”

Quote of the Day
“There will be more strong candidates jumping in. Truly, there is still a lot of time for folks to make up their minds and jump in and get their campaigns together. The field isn’t set yet. Not by a long shot.”

— Sarah Palin, quoted by the New York Times, on the Republican presidential field.

As Carbon Output Hits Record High, Palin Declares ?I Love That Smell Of The Emissions?

During the holiday weekend, former Alaska governor Sarah Palin (R) reclaimed her favorite position — the center of media attention — when she launched a national bus tour. Palin’s first stop was a motorcycle rally in D.C. where she rode in on a Harley and proudly announced to a group of veterans and TV cameras, “I love that smell of the emissions!” Ironically, the same day Palin professed her love of carbon emissions, the International Energy Agency issued a dramatic announcement on the same subject: greenhouse-gas emissions increased by a record amount last year to the highest carbon output in history.

The watchdog group reported that despite the recession, global carbon emissions rebounded in 2010 to their worst levels ever. One IEA official warned that the startling new numbers should serve as “another wake-up call.” Of course, Palin seemed as blithely unconcerned as ever with world events around her as she basked in the spotlight on Sunday:

Sarah Palin’s participation in the annual Memorial Day parade in Washington, D.C., has fueled as much noise about a potential presidential candidacy as the thousands of motorcycle-riding veterans participating in the Rolling Thunder ride-along Sunday.

At the Pentagon parking lot where the mob of veterans and their families pre-position for the thunderous two-wheeler march down Constitution Ave, Palin, who was not expected to address the Memorial Day crowd, said she was thrilled to participate.

“I love that smell of the emissions,” she said, donning sunglasses and a Harley Davidson skullcap-style, black helmet.

According to the IEA, a record 30.6 gigatons of carbon dioxide was released into the atmosphere last year, mainly from the burning of fossil fuels. In light of these shocking numbers, experts now fear that it will be impossible to prevent a temperature rise of more than 2 degrees Celsius — which scientists say is the threshold for potentially “dangerous climate change.”

One expert told The Guardian, “Such warming would disrupt the lives and livelihoods of hundreds of millions of people across the planet, leading to widespread mass migration and conflict.” Despite this distressing news, it’s unlikely that the woman who once roused conservative crowds by chanting “Drill Baby Drill!” knows or cares how tragically out of touch with reality her comments are.

Palin’s bus tour got off to a rocky start when members of the veterans group she claimed to be working with denounced her presence at the event. Even Fox News noted that several veterans were annoyed Palin had made the Memorial Day parade all about herself, distracting from the real message — honoring service members past and present. Her entire bus tour spectacle has left many in the media scratching their heads. It’s unclear if Palin is actually gearing up for a presidential run or is simply eager for more press attention as she’s felt the  national spotlight dim and refocus on the already declared candidates.

The GOP’s self-destruction derby

The GOP’s self-destruction derby

My advice to Sarah Palin, not that she would take it, is that she’d better be careful. If she keeps pretending to run for the presidential nomination, people might take her seriously.

The former half-term Alaska governor’s “One Nation” bus tour has made the Republican establishment nervous. If her aim is just to get back in the news, reinflate the Palin brand and boost her speaking fees, then party leaders have every reason to be pleased. In the unlikely event that she’s actually running, they have every reason to order another Scotch.

Cost of war in Afghanistan will be major factor in troop-reduction talks

Of all the statistics that President Obama’s national security team will consider when it debates the size of forthcoming troop reductions in Afghanistan, the most influential number probably will not be how many insurgents have been killed or the amount of territory wrested from the Taliban, according to aides to those who will participate.

It will be the cost of the war.

The U.S. military is on track to spend $113 billion on its operations in Afghanistan this fiscal year, and it is seeking $107 billion for the next. To many of the president’s civilian advisers, that price is too high, given a wide federal budget gap that will require further cuts to domestic programs and increased deficit spending. Growing doubts about the need for such a broad nation-building mission there in the wake of Osama bin Laden’s death have only sharpened that view.
