Late Late Nite FDL: Bush, The Anti Hope
Nine days ahead of the Hurricane Katrina anniversary, President Shock Doctrine extraordinaire graced New Orleans with his own brand of “hope” messaging today.

Tragically Hip – New Orleans is Sinking

Nine days ahead of the Hurricane Katrina anniversary, President Shock Doctrine extraordinaire graced New Orleans with his own brand of hope messaging today.

The front page of The Times Picayune had this to say:

Just blocks from the historic Louisiana National Guard facility where Bush delivered his comments and stretching for miles in every direction, large swaths of New Orleans and nearby St. Bernard Parish remain a hodgepodge of restored houses, abandoned, rotting lots and empty concrete slabs, the telltale sign of post-flood demolitions.

The region’s health care, criminal justice and public education systems also continue to struggle.

Somehow I don’t think hope means what President Bush thinks it means.

What’s on your mind tonight?

Your Liberal Media
3 hours of Joe Scarborough every morning and MSNBC might be “taking a foolish risk in over-committing itself to a single point of view.”

Your liberal media: so liberal that it cannot actually survive the presence of a single liberal.

How Do We Seize The “Obama Moment?”

Our at the Campaign for America’s Future blog, we’re having a two-week long conversation, “How Do We Seize the Obama Moment,” and substantial advance a progressive agenda in the early days of an Obama administration. Please feel free to head over there and share your thoughts.

The series kicked off with The Nation article from Robert Borosage and Katrina vanden Heuvel, “Progressives In The Obama Moment.”

I sought to draw lessons from The Missed “Clinton Moment” and “Deval Moment”

And Rick Perlstein called for “A Liberal Shock Doctrine” to quickly drive through major reforms before stasis returns to Washington.

All the posts have generated great conversation in the OurFuture.org comment threads, and posts will continue this week and through the Democratic convention next week. Join the conversation!

On Hugh Hewitt’s radio show last night, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney said that “the International Olympic Committee ought to revisit locating” the 2014 Olympics in Russia because of what “they’ve done in Georgia.” Ironically, the reason Romney gave for why the Games should be moved is because the “Russians have shown their willingness to act militarily against a sovereign nation“:

romneyolympics.jpgHEWITT: But I do want to ask you about the Olympics and your experience there, in terms of whether or not the Russians ought to get the Olympics in 2014 after what they’ve done in Georgia.

ROMNEY: Well, Hugh, my own view is as the Caucuses are a hot spot, and as Russians have shown their willingness to act militarily against a sovereign nation, that the International Olympic Committee ought to revisit locating the Games elsewhere.

Listen here:

Romney joins the list of conservatives who have criticized Russia’s actions, despite the Bush administration’s belligerent foreign policy. Last week, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) declared that “in the 21st century, nations don’t invade other nations.” Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said on Monday that military power is “not the way to deal in the 21st century.”
