Reeves: U.S. Could Use a Default
John Reeves: It is a sad situation when hard-working CEOs and money managers who make this country great must watch a bloated federal budget waste our hard-earned money. I think it is agreed by all parties that this prodigious spending is deplorable. So amid the current debate over the debt ceiling, I feel compelled to offer my Modest Proposal to fix our free-spending ways: a strategic default.

This story, it seems “familiar”

This story, it seems “familiar”
So, have you heard the one about the former American ally in the Middle East turning against us? I know, how rare.

Love means never having to say your sorry…or “incoming”. Picture via cliff1066 at flickr.com

Someday some American leader will actually anticipate something. Someday.

The man who murdered President Hamid Karzai’s half brother spent years as an ally of the United States in the war against the Taliban.

The killer, Sardar Mohammad, a police commander, met on several occasions with U.S. and British military officials, shared intelligence with Americans and played a part in Afghan arrests of scores of Taliban fighters, according to three relatives interviewed on Thursday in his home near Kandahar…

But one of Karzai’s brothers and a senior Afghan official said they were now convinced that the Taliban somehow won Mohammad’s allegiance in recent months and convinced him to carry out an assassination on the group’s behalf.

When has this ever happened before in this part of the world, other than pretty much every time? We and our policies of reflexive unthinking unconditional support of one country and bombing and/or occupying a fair share of the other countries in the region seems like such a clear path for consistent and unwavering popularity?

Better have a Predator drone fire off another missile to make us feel better.

Murdochs Agree to Testify in U.K., FBI Launches Probe
The News Corp. scandal that has already claimed one major entity in the Murdochian media empire—that would be News of the World—isn’t showing signs of dropping from the headlines anytime soon. On Thursday, mogul Rupert Murdoch and scion James agreed to face members of Britain’s Parliament to field questions related to alleged sketchy practices on the part of certain news outlets. Oh, and also, the FBI is getting involved, and there are rumors of shady Scotland Yard operatives. All this is starting to read a lot like a News Corp. tabloid story.  —KA The New York Times: In an abrupt reversal, the News Corporation said on Thursday afternoon that Rupert Murdoch and his son James would testify next week before a British parliamentary panel looking into phone hacking. They will appear along with Rebekah Brooks, the chief executive of the company’s beleaguered British newspaper group, known as News International. Separately, the Federal Bureau of Investigation opened an investigation on Thursday into allegations that News Corporation journalists hacked into the phones of the Sept. 11 terror attacks, according to people briefed on the matter. They said the investigation was prompted by news coverage of the hacking scandal and by requests from American politicians. Read more

REPORT: How CNN, MSNBC, And Fox Are Covering News Corp. Hacking Scandal

News Corp.’s long-simmering phone-hacking scandal has reignited, throwing its global media empire into turmoil. As allegations of hacking into private citizens’ voicemail increase, media and tabloid practices have been called into question. With a large and influential presence in the United States, News Corp. and its subsidiaries (including Fox News) should be under intense scrutiny in the American press. A Media Matters analysis has found great disparity in the amount of coverage given to the scandal by CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News.

Analysis: CNN Covered News Corp.’s Hacking Scandal In More Than 100 Segments

CNN And MSNBC Report On News Corp. Scandal More Than Twice As Often As Fox News. What’s Wrong with Panetta?

What’s Wrong with Panetta?
Leslie Gelb: “Something’s amiss with Leon Panetta. He is a very smart and very careful guy who is making one startling verbal slip after another, everything from chalking up the Iraq War, inexplicably and incorrectly, to al Qaeda’s presence in that country, to saying, again mistakenly, that there would be 70,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan by the end of 2014… This isn’t the guy who’s watched and balanced his words for more than four decades in politics.”

Top Murdoch Executive Resigns
Rebekah Brooks, chief executive of News International, has resigned, the BBC reports.

Her departure follows days of growing pressure to step down as the phone hacking crisis grew.

New York Times: “With the pace and fury of a hurricane, the scandal has spread in less than two weeks even though questions about the news-gathering techniques employed by News International had been under largely ineffective scrutiny by the police and Parliament for years… Once the scandal spread beyond Mr. Murdoch’s British outpost, major investors in the much bigger parent company, News Corporation, began questioning what was going on.”

Deal Reached to End Minnesota Shutdown
Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton (D) has negotiated a “framework” for a budget deal with the Republican leaders of the state House and Senate that could end the Minnesota government shutdown after a special session of the legislature set to begin next week, reports the Duluth News Tribune.

“In a way, each had lost a political friend: Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton gave up his long-held demand that the richest Minnesotans pay higher taxes; Republican House Speaker Kurt Zellers and Senate Majority Leader Amy Koch gave up their party’s strongly held stance of keeping state spending to no more than $34 billion in the next two years… Dayton said he would accept a offer Republican legislators made on June 30, the day before state government shut down. But he tacked three of his own requirements onto the proposal: All policy issues would be stripped from budget bills, a GOP plan to cut the state work force 15 percent would disappear and the Legislature must approve at least $500 million in public works construction… Koch and Zellers said they accepted Dayton’s proposal, but altered it. They did not say what changed.”

Politico: “There are national implications from the deal: if congressional Republicans draw the lesson from this imbroglio that the president might buckle on the debt ceiling debate if they stand as firm as the Minnesota GOP did for the last two weeks, the likelihood of default increases.”
