Most Americans Still Think Economy is in Recession
A new Quinnipiac poll finds that 79% of Americans believe the economy is still in a recession as compared to 74% who felt that way in May and 71% who said so in May of 2008, when the economy began its slide. A majority — 52% — also don’t think the economy has started to recover.
Most interesting: American voters say by a 64% to 30% margin that reducing unemployment is more important than reducing the federal budget deficit. Even Republicans say by 58% to 38% that reducing unemployment is more important.
Said pollster Peter Brown: “The public seems to be reassessing the view held through the winter and spring, when they thought economic conditions were lousy but could see the light at the end of the tunnel. Now they aren’t seeing that light.”
Boucher Holds Solid Lead in VA-9
A new SurveyUSA poll in Virginia’s 9th congressional district today finds Rep. Rick Boucher (D-VA) ahead of challenger Morgan Griffith (R), 52% to 39%.
Murkowski Well Ahead in Primary Race
An Ivan Moore Research Poll in Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) with a big lead over primary challenger Joe Miller (R) among likely GOP voters, 62% to 30%.
Key finding: Fewer than 50% of respondents even recognized Miller’s name, compared to 98% for Murkowski.
