Anti-Gay Slurs Drove 11-Year-Old to Suicide

Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover

Sirdeaner L. Walker of Springfield, Mass., complained to her son’s school about the daily taunts. The bullies who tormented her son Carl with the words gay and fag made her feel worse than the breast cancer she had survived. She was on her way to protest again when she found Carl, 11, hanged with an extension cord.

Walker said her son’s life wasn’t easy, but he was reliable and generous. “I have been homeless, but Carl and I made it through. … I was a victim of domestic violence, and we made it through. The one thing we couldn’t get through was public school,” she said.

ABC:

Walker, who works as a director of homeless programs, said Carl—a slight child who loved his schoolwork—had endured endless taunts since he started sixth grade in September.

[…] The boy had been active in his church, taking communion on the recent Palm Sunday and playing a wise man in the Christmas play. He helped the needy and a black history program.

“That’s the type of kid he was,” Walker said. “You could rely and count on him.”

Politico lets Gingrich attack public health insurance plan without disclosing financial ties to insurance companies

In an April 14 article, Politico‘s Carrie Budoff Brown reported that Newt Gingrich — identified as “the former Republican House Speaker from Georgia and founder of the Center for Health Transformation” — “argues that government intervention in the financial and auto industries will sour voters on a deep reach into health care.” Budoff Brown went on to quote Gingrich’s criticisms of the inclusion of a public insurance plan option in a health care reform proposal, including his remark: “There is always interest in it in general — until you start describing it, then it collapses.” But Budoff Brown did not note that the Center for Health Transformation is a for-profit entity that receives annual membership fees from several major health insurance companies, which have a direct interest in whether a public insurance plan is part of health care reform. Moreover, Gingrich himself reportedly profits from his involvement in the Center for Health Transformation. Indeed, the group’s website notes that “[t]he Center for Health Transformation and The Gingrich Group are corporate for-profit organizations not affiliated with any other corporation or organization” [emphasis added].

According to the Center for Health Transformation’s website, members pay tiered annual membership fees, providing varying degrees of “[a]ccess to Newt Gingrich on your company’s strategy,” among other benefits. Insurance groups UnitedHealth Group, the parent of UnitedHealthcare, and WellPoint Inc. are listed as “Charter” members, BlueCross BlueShield Association is listed as a “Platinum” member, and AHIP is listed as a “Premier” member.

Additionally, Gingrich has reportedly profited from his work with the Center. In a January 16, 2005, article, The New York Times described Gingrich as “a well-paid broker of ideas and influence in the field of health care policy” and reported that “[b]ase camp for Mr. Gingrich’s health policy work is his Center for Health Transformation, a for-profit organization that occupies new office space overlooking K Street, the main street for Washington lobbyists.” The Times also reported that the center’s members “pay yearly fees of up to $200,000.” Further, The Washington Post reported in a July 13, 2004, article (accessed via Nexis) that according to Gingrich aide Rick Tyler, the center’s for-profit status — as opposed to being a registered as a nonprofit lobbying group — enabled Gingrich to operate ” ‘under the radar.’ ” The article further quoted “former adviser Rich Galen” saying of Gingrich: “He’s making more money than he ever thought possible and doesn’t have to tell everybody where it’s coming from.”

From the Post article (accessed via Nexis):

Gingrich’s center is a “brilliantly packaged way of offering his services as former speaker and a man who can open doors to push along what he calls health transformation,” said Joseph Antos, a health policy expert at the American Enterprise Institute. “In other words, lobbying.”

Gingrich is not a registered lobbyist. The think tank is for-profit, he said, because “you get more drive and energy” from employees when money is at stake and “I believe in entrepreneurship.”

Aide Rick Tyler, however, acknowledged there were political reasons for diverging from the standard nonprofit lobby group model.

Having been formally reprimanded by the House in 1997 for violations associated with the political use of tax-exempt organizations — which were structured similarly to the new center — Gingrich decided that a nonprofit would have invited enormous scrutiny. Organizing as a for-profit company, however, permits him to operate “under the radar,” Tyler said.

“He’s making more money than he ever thought possible and doesn’t have to tell everybody where it’s coming from,” marveled former adviser Rich Galen. “He has the amount of influence he chooses to have. I suspect there is virtually no one in this town of either party who will not take a call from Newt Gingrich, if only to hear what he has to say.”

Ensign: Republicans will revive ?Drill Here, Drill Now? push this summer.
Yesterday, Hot Air’s Ed Morrissey interviewed Sen. John Ensign (R-NV) and touched on Congress’s legislative agenda. Yesterday, Hot Air’s Ed Morrissey interviewed Sen. John Ensign (R-NV) and touched on Congress’s legislative agenda. Ensign warned that conservatives needed to be “on guard” against “liberalism” being put in place “incrementally” on issues like energy. When Morrissey asked about the status of drilling legislation, Ensign said that it would be a focus of the GOP in the coming months:

MORRISSEY: In 2008, when gas prices spiked to their highest levels, we saw a great deal of enthusiasm for Drill Here, Drill Now type of legislation. Now obviously, prices have collapsed since then; they’re lower than half of what they used to be. But where is the “Drill Here, Drill Now” push now in Congress? Do we have anything like that — any momentum for that still left in Congress? Or has that been pretty much squelched?

ENSIGN: Certainly Republicans are going to be pushing that this summer. We’re going to be pushing the search for more American energy supplies, coming out with — there are several Republican proposals out there right now that are really comprehensive energy bills. Because there is no single approach that is going to answer our energy problems.

Watch it:

When gas prices were at record highs last summer, congressional Republicans tried to hammer Democrats for going on recess without supporting offshore oil drilling. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich was one of the driving outside forces behind the political stunt.

DHS Report: After Obama?s Election, Right-Wing Extremists ?May Be Gaining New Recruits?
Throughout the presidential campaign, the public saw extreme right-wing rhetoric on display at several McCain rallies, with some yelling “kill him” about President Obama — and others even calling him a “terrorist.” The extreme right — those who are “hate-oriented,” “mainly antigovernment,” or those dedicated to a “single issue” — is a legitimate threat that […]

rightwingextremism1.jpgThroughout the presidential campaign, the public saw extreme right-wing rhetoric on display at several McCain rallies, with some yelling “kill him” about President Obama — and others even calling him a “terrorist.”

The extreme right — those who are “hate-oriented,” “mainly antigovernment,” or those dedicated to a “single issue” — is a legitimate threat that law enforcement must deal with, according to a new assessment from the Office of Intelligence and Analysis at the Department of Homeland Security. The report, which was coordinated with the FBI and is being given to federal, state, and local law enforcement, warns:

[R]ightwing extremists may be gaining new recruits by playing on their fears about several emergent issues. The economic downturn and the election of the first African American president present unique drivers for rightwing radicalization and recruitment.

Most extremists have made “rhetorical” statements and have “stopp[ed] short of calls for violent action,” but since the 2008 election, right-wing extremists are “reaching out to a wider audience of potential sympathizers.” Some highlights from the report:

Anti-immgration: “Rightwing extremist groups’ frustration over a perceived lack of government action on illegal immigration has the potential to incite individuals or small groups toward violence. If such violence were to occur, it likely would be isolated, small-scale, and directed at specific immigration-related targets.”

Recruiting returning vets: “Rightwing extremists will attempt to recruit and radicalize returning veterans in order to exploit their skills and knowledge derived from military training and combat.”

Gun-related violence: “Heightened interest in legislation for tighter firearms … may be invigorating rightwing extremist activity, specifically the white supremacist and militia movements.”

If the “uncertain economy” and a “perceived rising influence of other countries” continues, “rightwing extremism is likely to grow in strength,” the report adds. “[L]one wolves and small terrorist cells embracing violent rightwing extremist ideology are the most dangerous domestic terrorism threat in the United States.”

The DHS under President Bush was apparently more reluctant to make such assessments about the right. According to CQ, a 2005 report outlining terrorist threats “does not mention anti-government groups, white supremacists and other radical right-wing movements.” Bush’s report did, however, list the threat of left-wing groups such as the Animal Liberation Front and the Earth Liberation Front. And a 2001 report from the Energy Department examined “Left-Wing Extremism: The Current Threat.”

Conservative bloggers — such Michelle Malkin and Newsbusters — are up in arms over the report. A DHS official responded to the right’s criticism, noting that DHS did an assessment of left-wing extremism in January. “This is nothing unusual. … This is about awareness,” the official said.

Update The Southern Poverty Law Center also reports that the “number of hate groups operating in the United States continued to rise in 2008 and has grown by 54 percent since 2000 – an increase fueled last year by immigration fears, a failing economy and the successful campaign of Barack Obama.”

Update Newt Gingrich tweets: “The person who drafted the outrageous homeland security memo smearing veterans and conservatives should be fired”

Update Jonathan Chait writes: “The report is about murderous lunatics. I kind of figured conservatives would try to define potential domestic terrorists as the fringe right. And, indeed, I’d agree that, for all its rhetorical and ideological excesses, conservatism is an ideology that usually stops short of fomenting violence against lawful authorities. But there’s Michelle Malkin calling potential terrorists ‘conservatives.'”
