A new Southern Media & Opinion Research poll in Louisiana shows Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA) leading challenger John Kennedy (R), 46% to 41%, with 14% still undecided.
July 4, 1776 — A Triumph of Liberalism
My favorite part of the Fourth of July isn’t the fireworks, or the hot dogs, or BBQ, or watermelon. Or the parades or patriotic movies (though HBO’s John Adams is absolutely awesome). No, my favorite part is walking around with the smug satisfaction that those bunch of authoritarians running around today — the Krauthammers and the Limbaughs and the Noonans, the Goldbergs, the Wills, the K-Los, the Steyns, the Brookses, the Dobsons, the Robertsons, the Yorks, the Malkins and the Hewitts — would all undoubtedly be Loyalists in 1776. Heh.
My favorite part of the Fourth isn’t the fireworks, or the hot dogs, or the grilling of various meats with the neighbors, or the watermelon. Or the parades or the patriotic movies (though HBO’s John Adams is absolutely awesome — go get it immediately if you haven’t seen it) or getting the day off or even the Twilight Zone marathon on Sci-Fi.

July 4 (Bloomberg) — European banks may need to raise as much as 90 billion euros ($141 billion) to restore their capital after the U.S. subprime mortgage collapse caused credit markets to seize up, according to Goldman Sachs Group Inc.
European banks have already raised $115 billion from investors to replenish capital after reporting $134 billion in writedowns, Goldman analysts led by Christoffer Malmer said in a note to clients today

On Independence Day, it’s always worth reflecting on what it means to be an American.
Watching Sen. Barack Obama’s Monday speech on patriotism below is not a bad way to start. You don’t have to agree with every line to appreciate and ponder its larger meaning.
Issues are more important than rhetoric of course. But a speech like this does make you think about how his presidency can connect us to our government again, and deepen our love of country.

Students tortured, stabbed 246 times
Two gifted French students found stabbed to death after a fire at a London flat were bound and tortured in what detectives yesterday described as one of the most horrific attacks they had ever seen. The bodies of Laurent Bonomo and Gabriel Ferez, both 23, were found in a ground-floor flat in south-east London on Sunday night. They were stabbed more than 200 times in an apparently motiveless attack before the flat was set alight. The pair were promising research students who had been working on a DNA research project at Imperial College, London.

The Hollywood Liberal started in 2004 at the height of the Bush Administration madness in America. We were inspired by the late great Bartcop.com. The very first thing I did when the site started was to get arrested at the 2004 Republican National Convention in New York. My arrest at the start of a march from The World Trade Center was later ruled unconstitutional by a federal judge. On New Years Eve 2014 the case was finally settled, with a judge awarding a class action suit that I was part of over $26 Million. I posted daily on the blog up until the end of The Bush error, and the site is now run as a history of the whole fiasco.
