Ex-Aide Says He’s Lost Faith in Bush
NY Times
Excerpt:
AUSTIN, Tex., March 29 — In 1999, Matthew Dowd became a symbol of George W. Bush’s early success at positioning himself as a Republican with Democratic appeal.
Former Adviser Breaks With Bush A top strategist for the Texas Democrats who was disappointed by the Bill Clinton years, Mr. Dowd was impressed by the pledge of Mr. Bush, then governor of Texas, to bring a spirit of cooperation to Washington. He switched parties, joined Mr. Bush’s political brain trust and dedicated the next six years to getting him to the Oval Office and keeping him there. In 2004, he was appointed the president’s chief campaign strategist.
Looking back, Mr. Dowd now says his faith in Mr. Bush was misplaced.
In a wide-ranging interview here, Mr. Dowd called for a withdrawal from Iraq and expressed his disappointment in Mr. Bush’s leadership.
He criticized the president as failing to call the nation to a shared sense of sacrifice at a time of war, failing to reach across the political divide to build consensus and ignoring the will of the people on Iraq. He said he believed the president had not moved aggressively enough to hold anyone accountable for the abuses at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, and that Mr. Bush still approached governing with a “my way or the highway†mentality reinforced by a shrinking circle of trusted aides.
“I really like him, which is probably why I’m so disappointed in things,†he said. He added, “I think he’s become more, in my view, secluded and bubbled in.â€
In speaking out, Mr. Dowd became the first member of Mr. Bush’s inner circle to break so publicly with him.
HLs Take
This guy is a flip flopper, seems like he goes whichever way the wind blows, but at least he is smart enough to jump off the Bad ship Bush like a rat off a burning navy ship in Pearl Harbor, some of the dumb ones are going to go down, all the way down on the Titanic, until there are no more life boats left, those guys will wind up in Prison.

How about Duke Cunningham, soon we will have Scooter Libby, in the past there was G. Gordon Liddy, and John Mitchell. Caspar Weinberger, would have gone in but he was pardoned by Bush Sr. Nixon would have gone in but he was pardoned by Ford, there are a few, there are lots more I am sure.

Pardoned at the end of the term right?? Just like all the other presidents have done. Funny how you only mention Bush Sr., how many get out of jail free cards did Clinton hand out when he left office.
Oh wait I forgot here on The Hollywood Liar only the republicans are guilty. The democrates that do the same crap get a pass.
I did say politician right?? I was not talking about aides and cronies.

You specifically asked to name politicians. Clinton didn’t pardon any politicians that I know of.
So you ask me a question then accuse me of lying because I didn’t answer a different question which you didn’t ask. Yeah Whatever.

HL you think that a Democrat that changed to Republican is going to stick with the Republican. You need to read that article again. The only reason he changed partys was to catch a ride to the white house on G.W’s coat tails and he said that in what you posted”He switched parties, joined Mr. Bush’s political brain trust and dedicated the next six years to getting him to the Oval Office and keeping him there”. It never said anything about him chaging his opinion on things. So that just made him a Democrat trying to be a Republican.

I talk about them like they are nothing? I am the one trying to get them home. When you leave them over there forever to die for lies and oil you are the one that treats them like they are nothing. Its a disgrace, and anyone who is behind it is disgraceful.

HL you still haven’t proven that we are there on a lie. And yet I have given you facts and web sites that prove that the US wasn’t the only country that agreed that Saddam had to go because they thought he was restarting his WMD projects. Your own President Bill Clinton even signed a Bill stating that Iraq needed a regeme change and that Saddam had to go so tell me HL how are you going to fight those facts. That bill is there for everyone to see and good ole slick willie’s signature is the one on the bottom. So you want to blame someone than start with your own good buddy Bill.

What is real sad is there have only been 14 Democratic Presidents to Bush and 28 Republicans and yet if you figure out how many people each have pardoned it works out to each democrat giving 990 pardons out per President and each republican giving out 509 pardons per President. So I guess the Republicans believe in the system more than the Democrats. Oh yeah that works out to the Democrats with 14 Presidents giving out 13,860 and the Republicans with 28 Presidents giving out 14,250.

And if you guys will remember it was either Nixon or one of the presidents after him that pardoned Bill Clinton after he chose to leave the country rather than be drafted. The theres good ole Bill later running for office so he could lead the country he chose to not serve and protect at one time now if that doesnt tell you something is wrong with our political system then what does. I’m neither Democrat or Republican I vote for who I think would do the best job for this country not the best for his party

Actually it was Carter who pardoned the people who left for Canada to avoid the draft. Clinton was not one of them. Clinton had a very high draft number and was in no danger of being drafted. Not to mention the fact that Clinton was a student. Students were not being drafted anyway. Clinton left the country to be a Rhoades Scolar at Oxford. So you are wrong on all counts. Typical.
