Belarus President Brings Back Serfdom
Alexander Lukashenko, the president of Belarus, agreed last week to sign a new decree that would forbid workers on collective farms from leaving to pursue jobs elsewhere, increase the power of regional governors and “teach the peasants to work more efficiently,” according to a Russian language article published on Gazeta. The dictator’s statement came around the same time Belarus joined with Russia and Kazakhstan to form a Eurasian Economic Union, the membership of which implies free movement of labor between the nations. Lukashenko has a habit of making bold and outrageous statements when he hopes to get something from Moscow.
Jane Fonda Gets AFI Life Achievement Honor
A cast of Hollywood stars paid tribute to actress and political activist Jane Fonda as she accepted the American Film Institute’s Life Achievement Award. Actresses including Meryl Streep, Sally Field, Sandra Bullock and Cameron Diaz saluted the 76-year-old Oscar-winner at Thursday’s event in Hollywood. Her late father, actor Henry Fonda, received the AFI award in 1978. Accepting the award, Fonda offered advice on career longevity and said, “Ask questions, stay curious. It’s much more important to be interested than to be interesting.”
