Belarus President Brings Back Serfdom
Alexander Lukashenko, the president of Belarus, agreed last week to sign a new decree that would forbid workers on collective farms from leaving to pursue jobs elsewhere, increase the power of regional governors and “teach the peasants to work more efficiently,” according to a Russian language article published on Gazeta. The dictator’s statement came around the same time Belarus joined with Russia and Kazakhstan to form a Eurasian Economic Union, the membership of which implies free movement of labor between the nations. Lukashenko has a habit of making bold and outrageous statements when he hopes to get something from Moscow.

Jane Fonda Gets AFI Life Achievement Honor
A cast of Hollywood stars paid tribute to actress and political activist Jane Fonda as she accepted the American Film Institute’s Life Achievement Award. Actresses including Meryl Streep, Sally Field, Sandra Bullock and Cameron Diaz saluted the 76-year-old Oscar-winner at Thursday’s event in Hollywood. Her late father, actor Henry Fonda, received the AFI award in 1978. Accepting the award, Fonda offered advice on career longevity and said, “Ask questions, stay curious. It’s much more important to be interested than to be interesting.”

VA Scandal Further Discredits Obama’s Big Government Policies

VA Scandal Further Discredits Obama’s Big Government Policies
Michael Barone, RealClearPolitics
President Obama evidently was caught by surprise by the scandal at the Department of Veterans Affairs. So, apparently, was VA Secretary Eric Shinseki, who evidently took at face value the corrupt VA statistics — and who, after a distinguished military career, resigned last week. One who was probably not taken by surprise is longtime Yale Law Professor Peter Schuck, who identified the problems at the VA before the scandal broke in his recently published book, “Why Government Fails So Often and How It Can Do Better.” Schuck is no libertarian who wants to do away with government altogether. He…

Pop Culture Isn’t to Blame for “Slenderman” Stabbing
Tom Bevan, RealClearPolitics
I rarely find myself in disagreement with John Kass, whom I consider one of America’s preeminent columnists, and a friend. But this week John missed the mark in his column seeking an explanation for the inexplicable: the horrific stabbing of a 12-year-old Wisconsin girl by two of her classmates. To recap briefly: Anissa Weier and Morgan Geyser, two sixth-grade girls from suburban Milwaukee, apparently became infatuated with “Slenderman,” a mythical, menacing, faceless evil specter that exists on the Internet and is most closely associated with stories involving the stalking…

A federal judge struck down Wisconsin’s ban on same-sex marriage on Friday. Immediately, couples across the state tied the knot.

Though the Attorney General has already requested an emergency stay as the ruling will be appealed to the conservative Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, clerks in Wisconsin started issuing marriage licenses an hour after the decision was released.
