Reid Sets Adjournment Date

Reid Sets Adjournment Date
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) “has agreed to the House target of adjourning Congress by Sept. 26, giving it only a few weeks to finish an agenda that, Democrats say, has been backed up because of Republican opposition,” according to The Hill.

“Republicans have frustrated Reid by launching dozens of filibusters to slow Senate business… As Election Day nears, however, it has become clear that Democratic leaders have little desire to keep their members away from the campaign trail during what some analysts predict could be a windfall election for their party.”

Quote of the Day
“Maybe that’s a way of killing them.”

— Sen. John McCain, quoted by the AP, when asked about a report that $158 million in cigarettes have been shipped to Iran during George W. Bush’s presidency despite restrictions on U.S. exports to that country.

Honeybees and Squash in DownTown Detroit: The Return of Mother Nature
Today in downtown Detroit, on land reclaimed by the city, local inhabitants are growing grapes, asparagus, currants, and gooseberries. And they’re raising honeybees in an attempt to create the first twenty-first century green sustainable city in America.

In Detroit, nature is beginning to reclaim urban areas. There are pheasants roaming in some of the city’s 40,000 vacant lots and even a tree rising from the roof of the fifty year old Packard auto plant. There’s also no major national or regional grocery store in the city’s downtown. It is what Mari Gallagher calls a food desert, a place where it is easier to get fast food than real food.

On day nine of his Red State Road Trip, Chris Hume documents the rise and fall of this great American city and what its residents are doing to grow their own food. Today in downtown Detroit, on land reclaimed by the city, local inhabitants are growing grapes, asparagus, currants, and gooseberries. And they’re raising honeybees in an attempt to create the first twenty-first century green sustainable city in America. Red State Road Trip is a Shoot and Run Productions. Late Night: Choosing and Losing (FISA Edition)

And here's to you, Mrs. Robinson….

Going to the candidate's debate.
Laugh about it, shout about it
When you've got to choose
Every way you look at this you lose.

Defiant Iran tests missiles to show strength in face of US warnings
It’s to be expected if you keep threatening to attack someone that they will find a way to let you know the consequences if you do so.Tehran significantly raised tensions in the Persian Gulf yesterday by conducting missile tests and making clear that its weapons could be used against Israel and US forces if Iran was attacked. According to Iranian official reports, the military exercise involved nine missiles, one of them a new Shahab-3 long-range missile that could easily reach Israel and a

Obama Just Can’t Stop … Not Shifting Rightward

Obama Just Can’t Stop … Not Shifting Rightward

In the past 48 hours, Obama has:

1) Re-affirmed his support for direct diplomacy with Iran, even after Iran conducted a missile test and McCain and his fellow necons couldn’t barely keep themselves from drooling over the prospect of a fresh war.

Now is the time to work with our friends and allies, and to pursue direct and aggressive diplomacy with the Iranian regime backed by tougher unilateral and multilateral sanctions. It’s time to offer the Iranians a clear choice between increased costs for continuing their troubling behavior, and concrete incentives that would come if they change course.

Obama did not use this is as an opportunity to shift his position or try to blur his position with McCain’s, on a critical matter that the next president will surely have to address.

2) While campaigning in a red sate, explicitly embraced a role for our government in stopping unethical lenders:

“Like the president he hopes to succeed, Sen. McCain does not believe the government has a real role to play in protecting Americans from unscrupulous lending practices,” Obama said in remarks before a few thousand people in a high school gymnasium outside of Atlanta. “He would continue to allow the banks and credit card companies to tilt the playing field in their favor, at the expense of hardworking Americans.”

3) Backed equality for women as a strategy for economic growth, while on NBC’s Today:

“It’s not that women are unique in feeling pressure under this economy. It’s the fact they get paid 78 cents on the dollar compared to men, and 62 percent of families rely on women for at least half and maybe more than half of their income,” Obama replied. “So if we can raise wages and incomes for women, if we can make sure that they’ve got paid family leave, if they’ve got more support for child care, that doesn’t just benefit women. It benefits all American families.”

4) Encouraged people to quit worrying about “English-only” laws and start worrying about getting our kids to learn second languages:

“You know, I don’t understand when people are going around worrying about, ‘We need to have English- only.’ They want to pass a law, ‘We want English-only,'” Obama said. “Now, I agree that immigrants should learn English. I agree with that. But understand this. Instead of worrying about whether immigrants can learn English — they’ll learn English — you need to make sure your child can speak Spanish. You should be thinking about, how can your child become bilingual? We should have every child speaking more than one language.

“You know, it’s embarrassing when Europeans come over here, they all speak English, they speak French, they speak German. And then we go over to Europe, and all we can say [is], ‘Merci beaucoup.’ Right? (Laughter) You know, no, I’m serious about this. We should understand that our young people, if you have a foreign language, that is a powerful tool to get a job. You are so much more employable. You can be part of international business. So we should be emphasizing foreign languages in our schools from an early age, because children will actually learn a foreign language easier when they’re 5, or 6, or 7 than when they’re 46, like me.”

So can we end this ridiculous talk that Obama is going to run as Republican Lite?

Reporters Dismiss McCain?s Iran ?Joke? As Part Of His ?Real Guy? Persona
The AP reported yesterday that U.S. exports to Iran “grew more than tenfold during President Bush’s years in office.” When a reporter informed Sen. The AP reported yesterday that U.S. exports to Iran “grew more than tenfold during President Bush’s years in office.” When a reporter informed Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) of the story, noting that “America sent more cigarettes to Iran…than any other products,” McCain said, “Maybe thats a way of killing them.” After being poked in the back by his wife, McCain quickly added, “I meant that as a joke!” — presumably one similar to his bomb Iran “joke.”

Some reporters dismissed McCain’s new Iran “joke,” suggesting that it is perhaps just part of his “regular guy” persona, an endearing quality for a man running for an office that commands the world’s strongest and most advanced military:

NBC’s Chuck Todd: “That’s what makes him real and that’s what makes people who disagree with him say ‘ah, you know what? The guy seems like any guy you’d want to have around the dinner table or the bar stool.’”

CNN’s Jessica Yellin: “People who love him think his a maverick and think he’s a real guy who makes a joke off the cuff just like real people do [but] we’re all waiting to see if something explodes, this kind of comment doesn’t.”

Watch it:

Despite agreeing with Todd’s assessment, MSNBC host Joe Scarborough noted that McCain “jokes a lot about killing Iranians.” And as Matt Yglesias noted, this time, “the targets of his lust for killing foreigners are clearly ordinary Iranian civilians.”

But the press have once again decided to let McCain slide, choosing instead to hype his alleged “real guy,” “maverick” and “straight talker” status.

Digg It!
