Top White House Officials Subpoenaed Over Attorney Scandal

Former White House counsel Harriet Miers and former top Karl Rove aide Sara Taylor, who served as White House political director before resigning last month, have been issued subpoenas over their connections to the U.S. attorney scandal.

UPDATE: These are the first subpoenas delivered to the White House regarding the attorney firings. The House Judiciary Committee issued the subpoena to Miers, and the Senate Judiciary Committee issued the subpoena to Taylor. Emails showing Taylor and Miers deeply involved in the Justice Department’s response to the scandal were released last night.

UPDATE II: The AP reports, “The Senate Judiciary Committee’s subpoena for Taylor compels her to testify on July 11, while the House Judiciary Committee’s subpoena for Miers compels her testimony the next day.”

UPDATE III: CNN’s legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin reports, “The White House has made clear it will cite executive privilege for conversations that took place within the White House on the U.S. attorney matter, and if the people with those conversations happen to have subsequently left the White House, that doesn’t matter. They’re still going to cite executive privilege, and these people are not going to be allowed to testify anytime soon, it appears, if the White House remains as it has been. … Even if they want to testify.”

Trial lawyer A. Donald McEachin upset 30-year veteran state Sen. Benjamin J. Lambert III yesterday in a Democratic primary in the Richmond area.
Lambert was supposedly a Democrat, yet he shocked the Virginia political establishment last October with this:

A senior Democratic state lawmaker endorsed Republican Sen. George Allen’s bid for reelection Tuesday, after having earlier criticized Democrat James Webb’s position on affirmative action.

State Sen. Benjamin J. Lambert III (Richmond), who is black, praised Allen in a letter on his senate stationery released yesterday by the Allen campaign.

It’s starting to look a little like the primaries won’t even matter next year. Hilary is out in front, according to the polls, and now it’s starting to look like this Fred Thompson guy will be the Republican nominee. If he’s got Cheney behind him, the most powerful man in the world, how can he lose. As I said before they want this guy to be the next Reagan, just sit back and make speeches and let them do all the killing stealing and dirty work, one problem though Reagan actually had a little charisma, people couldn’t help but like him (don’t ask me why) This Thompson guy is just a slug though. Guess that doesn’t matter when you can fix elections, and if necessary have the Supreme Court illegally declare the President if need be. At first the Republicans thought they could get Arnold schwarzenegger as the next Reagan, but it turned out the guy actually has a brain, and they can’t have that. So Fred Thompson it is. Didn’t this guy recently have a heart attack? Wonder who is running mate will be?

Accused Al Qaeda operative can’t be jailed indefinitely, appeals court rules

Habeas corpus, which is used to challenge imprisonment and enforce due-process rights, “is what stands between the United States and a police state,” Hafetz said.
