Bush's Mysterious 'New Programs'

Excerpt: Later, the New York Times reported that “KBR would build the centers for the Homeland Security Department for an unexpected influx of immigrants, to house people in the event of a natural disaster or for new programs that require additional detention space.” [Feb. 4, 2006]
Like most news stories on the KBR contract, the Times focused on concerns about Halliburton’s reputation for bilking U.S. taxpayers by overcharging for sub-par services.
“It’s hard to believe that the administration has decided to entrust Halliburton with even more taxpayer dollars,” remarked Rep. Henry Waxman, D-California.

Guess who the big loser is under Bush health plan

Excerpt: Heads up, Americans. The Bush administration is now greasing the skids for employers to drop your health coverage. This is a biggie.
Radical change was not the headline when the president unfurled his latest proposals for health savings accounts. It was presented mainly as a sensible-sounding way for people without medical insurance to buy it with pre-tax dollars, the same way companies do.

US Congress Votes to Provoke Iran

Excerpt:We're seeing a mirror image of the Iraq war buildup. After all that's been exposed, how is it possible that they can possibly be pushing another war in exactly the same fashion? They're getting away with it solely thanks to the complicity of Congress.

Skype a nightmare for wiretappers

Excerpt:
Skype, the Internet calling service recently acquired by eBay Inc., provides free voice calls and instant messaging between users. Unlike other Internet voice services, Skype calls are encrypted — encoded using complex mathematical operations. That apparently makes them impossible to snoop on, though the firm leaves the issue somewhat open to question.

NY Times
U.S. Reclassifies Many Documents in Secret Review

Excerpt: WASHINGTON, Feb. 20 — In a seven-year-old secret program at the National Archives, intelligence agencies have been removing from public access thousands of historical documents that were available for years, including some already published by the State Department and others photocopied years ago by private historians.

Yet Another Agency in Charge of Domestic Intelligence?

Excerpt: It took me a half dozen e-mails and telephone calls over three days to just to confirm that yes, the Directorate of National Intelligence, or DNI, the new-ish uber-spooks body — has opened an office to deal with state and local law enforcement.
And it took me a few more inquiries before the DNI gave up the name of its head, Michael Tiffany, though nothing more.
Mind you, this is not classified information. Forget about denying public information to a pesky reporter: State and local cops have to know who’s in charge of state and local law enforcement issues, right?

San Jose Mercury News
Justices to weigh late-term abortion ban

Excerpt: The Bush administration has pressed the high court to reinstate the federal law, passed in 2003 but never put in effect because it was struck down by judges in California, Nebraska and New York.
The outcome will likely rest with the two men that President Bush has recently installed on the court. Justices had been split 5-4 in 2000 in striking down a state law, barring what critics call partial birth abortion because it lacked an exception to protect the health of the mother.
