8/23/05 Video of Senator Russ Feingold Live. At UCLA Law School

HL with The Senator

Senator Russ Feingold gave a speech yesterday at UCLA Law School.
The event was held in the largest lecture hall at the school, and was
packed. Over 300 people showed up to hear The Senator speak on The Iraq
War, The nomination of John Roberts to The Supreme Court, and other issues.
Senator Feingold spoke harshly of President Bush's policies, and on The Democrats
Response to them. He said that he knew before The Iraq War, that the evidence
presented to Congress to go to war was very flimsy, that he could see that
there was no evidence linking Saddam Hussein to 9/11, so he voted no to send troops to Iraq.
The Senator went on to say that since the war has begun that Bush has offered no leadership, and that his speeches on the war, which are filled with "stay the course" platitudes is making the U.S. weaker in terms of terrorism. The Senator has proposed a resolution in congress, the first of its kind, that within 30 days, The President give some kind of plan for a timetable in Iraq. Of course Bush flatly refused to even consider the idea. Feingold said that The Democratic Caucus is too timid in dealing with Bush.
Mr. Feingold told a story of traveling to every district in his home state of Wisconsin, and said that even in the most conservative parts of the state the people are getting disgusted with Bush, and his policies. At one such meeting after a group of conservatives had voiced their displeasure with Bush, and the War, The Senator said "I didn't know there were so many radicals up here" One old lady yelled out "We're getting there."
Other comments by Feingold included calling the Federal Election Committee a joke. He also called the FEC a rogue agency, that is not enforcing the law. He want's to make changes to the agency, which would replace the members with administrative law judges. He also said he was for guaranteed health care, and is sponsoring a Bill with Senator Lindsey Graham to get Congress to at least consider the issue which he said that so far they refuse to touch.
On Patriot Act 2, Mr Feingold voted no, and the bill went down in The Senate, The House approved the bill, so now it is in the confrence committee where a compromise will be worked on. In regards to John Roberts, Feingold said he has not made a decision, and will ask the tough questions before he decides. Mr. Feingold makes a point of picking battles, and not coming out against every thing Bush does, so that when he does object to something, there is more chance at getting people to go along. I happen to disagree with this, and think the Democrats should be unanimous in their oppostion to everything Bush does. This was the only thing that I did not agree with The Senator on during his talk.
When I arrived at the speech I asked someone who was in charge if I could tape the event. I was never given an answer, so toward the end I turned on the camera and got the tail end where The Senator was taking questions. Overall Senator Feingold seemed to be in touch with the people. He said that he does his own shopping so he knows how much things cost, and also said he was the least wealthy member of The Senate So here it is, about 7 minutes long. .
