BP Spill Damaged Gulf Coral

BP Spill Damaged Gulf Coral
The Deepwater Horizon oil spill damaged coral formations deep beneath the surface of the Gulf of Mexico and miles from the ruptured well at the heart of the disaster, researchers report. Scientists using remote-controlled probes and a submersible spotted a coral colony covered in “black scum” about 7 miles southwest of the undersea gusher, Penn State University biologist Charles Fisher said. Another nearby formation was covered in a gooey brown and white mix of oil and organic materials from the coral. “What this does tell us is there was acute damage to a reef 7 miles away,” Fisher said. “It tells us it’s likely this oil hit a lot of other areas of the seafloor.”

LAPD Cop Accused of Racial Profiling
A white police officer in Los Angeles has targeted Latino drivers for traffic stops because of their ethnicity, the police department determined. Patrick Smith, a 15-year veteran who worked on motorcycle assignment in the West Traffic division, allegedly misidentified some Latinos as white on purpose. A three-person board will decide whether Smith should be fired.

SimCity is Back

SimCity is Back
Coming next year: A updated version of SimCity, the first in nearly a decade.

Mashable: “And if this preview is any indication, we’re going to be spending much of next year glued to our PC screens.”

Bonus Quote of the Day
“I can tell you one thing. If I’m the godfather of this thing, then it gives me the right to kill it.”

— Mitt Romney, in an interview with Hugh Hewitt, on President Obama’s health care law.

Lawmaker Admonished for Wearing a Hoodie
Rep. Bobby Rush (D-IL) spoke on the House floor wearing a hooded sweatshirt — to protest the killing of Florida teen Trayvon Martin — and the presiding Republican ordered him removed from the chamber, reminding members they are not allowed to wear hats.

Said Rush: “Racial profiling has to stop. Just because someone wears a hoodie does not make them a hoodlum.”

From Train Wreck to Plane Wreck
After another round of Supreme Court questions, Jeffrey Toobin told CNN the fate of President Obama’s health care law looks even worse.

Said Toobin: “This still looks like a train wreck for the Obama Administration, and it may also be a plane wreck. This entire law is now in serious trouble. It also seems that the individual mandate is doomed. I mean, Anthony Kennedy spent much of this morning talking about if we strike down the individual mandate, how should we handle the rest of the law? Now, it is less clear that they are going to strike down the whole law. There does seem to be some controversy in the court about that. Certainly there are some members of the court, Antonin Scalia, Justice Alito, who want to strike down the entire law, but it seemed almost a foregone conclusion today that they were going to strike down the individual mandate, and the only question is does the whole law go out the window with it?”

He added: “Well, it’s hard to imagine how things could be going much worse for the Obama Administration.”

Internal Emails Confirm NOM’s Emphasis On Highlighting Anti-Equality African-Americans

Last year, Louis J. Marinelli came out for marriage equality after being exposed to hundreds who protested the National Organization for Marriage, for which he worked. Since then, he has revealed many of the anti-gay group’s internal documents, and today he added some fuel to the fire created by the confidential memos released earlier this week.

Marinelli has posted various internal emails that prove NOM has placed an emphasis on race, seeking to elevate the voices of anti-equality blacks to create barriers from the white-dominated gay community. Throughout the messages, Maggie Gallagher repeatedly requests pictures of black religious leaders participating in protests (typos are her own):

GALLAGHER: I believe these are COGIC bishops, black bishops. That’s why I’m saying make sure we feature and focus on thejm.

GALLAGHER: He’s black, he’s on our side, he’s COGIC, I need a closeup please advice.

GALLAGHER: I’m told the rally was two-third blacks. All the photos we have up are taken behind white people. Any phot that shows the crowd as it was? Please send it to me and Eve tushnet for use in this week’s newsletter.

GALLAGHER: Eve, take a look at these and see if any of them reflect a. large crowd 2-1 black and/or b. Fauteroy.

In two other emails, project leader Joe Giganti confirms that he has collected photos that portray a group of black NOM protesters clashing with white LGBT counter-protesters:

GIGANTI: I’ve been reviewing these shots this morning. From this first email, there are several good shots that demonstrate a majority Black American crowd.

GIGANTI: This is a great contrast shot of our people all happy and smiling (majority black, only one non-black in picture) versus the angry counter-protesters… Keep this one close for future use—maybe a dynamic picture point that rotates between positive, happy shots of our people versus our angry foes?

Like the Southern Poverty Law Center has pointed out, NOM is blatantly using the African-American community to further its opposition to the freedom to marry. This is unfiltered animus in action.

Court Must Uphold Mandate

GOP Causing a Moral Crisis in America
Katrina vanden Heuvel, Wash Post
There is moral crisis afoot! So say the Republican candidates for president, their pals in Congress and in state houses. Abortion, gay marriage, contraception — contraception, for Pete’s sake — things that so shock the conscience that it’s a wonder The Washington Post can even print the words! Here’s something I bet you wouldn’t think I’d say: They’re right. There is a moral crisis in the United States. The only thing is — they’re wrong about what it is and who is causing it.

ObamaCare Ruling Won’t Affect 2012
Jonathan Bernstein, New Republic
Several people are calling the Supreme Court sessions on the Affordable Care Act the most important since Bush v. Gore. The case is certainly critically important to the fate of the law, and with it the future of health care, the federal budget, and perhaps the U.S. economy. But you know what’s not riding on the Court’s decision, despite plenty of hype? The 2012 election. The truth is that the decision in this case will likely have little or no effect on Obama v. Romney.
