In 1994 Mitt Romney ran for the U.S. Senate. His opponent: Ted Kennedy. During that campaign Romney was critical of the liberalism of his opponent even coining s term “Kennedy Country” as means of describing the devastation Kennedy's liberal social policies had wrought on the poor neighborhoods in Massachusetts.He lost that election but won his next attempt at state wide office as Governor in 2002.  He ran on the pledge that he would not saddle the people of the state with socialist tax-and-spend or an expansion of liberal social policies.

On December 20, the House of Representatives refused to pass the Senate's 2-month Social Security payroll tax cut extension.  This created the genuine possibility that this temporary 2.0 percentage point cut in the 6.2% Social Security tax normally paid by employees would expire at the end of this year.It became clear before the financial markets opened in New York on December 20 that the tax cut extension would be defeated.  The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) opened sharply higher and ended the day up 2.9%.

Newt Gingrich fired back at Mitt Romney’s assertion that he can’t take the heat of a vigorous campaign, saying here Wednesday that he can “take the heat plenty well,” accusing his rival of hiding and challenging his rival to a one-on-one debate in Iowa next week to settle their differences.Gingrich had earlier called on Romney to disavow the negative ads being aired in Iowa by a Super PAC that backs Romney’s candidacy.
