Panetta orders review of discipline in Dover mortuary probe
Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta on Thursday ordered the Air Force to review whether it had been tough enough in disciplining — but not firing — three supervisors at the Dover Air Force Base mortuary, saying: “Full accountability is what we intend to deliver.”
Panetta also said he had faith in Air Force Secretary Michael B. Donley, despite harsh criticism from lawmakers and an independent federal agency about the credibility of the Air Force’s 18-month investigation into missing body parts and mishandled remains at the Dover mortuary, which handles the remains of American troops killed overseas.
Senate votes against net neutrality killer
The Senate upheld Internet access rules known as net neutrality on Thursday, rejecting a move to overturn the Federal Communications Commission’s regulations.
The Republican-backed bill to scrap the FCC’s net neutrality rules failed to pass muster in a 46-to-52 vote that fell strictly along party lines.
Rick Perry does damage control, vows to press on
ROCHESTER, Mich. — Republican presidential hopeful Rick Perry spent much of Thursday trying to contain the damage from his debate-night debacle here on Wednesday by poking fun at himself, promising to press on and playing down the value of oratory skills.
“We’ve got a debater in chief right now that’s not working out so well,” said the Texas governor, taking a shot at President Obama’s public-speaking talents. “We’ve got to focus on the substance of what’s killing America, and it’s Washington, D.C., spending too much money and creating too much debt.”
Herman Cain, meeting Michigan voters on Thursday, told a joke about Anita Hill, the woman who in the 1990s accused Clarence Thomas, then a nominee to the Supreme Court, of sexual harassment.
Asked if he heard the latest news on Hill, who is out with a new book on race and gender, Cain at first doubled over in laughter, and then had a quip of his own: “Is she going to endorse me?”
