Greg Gutfeld: Sexist Jester On Fox’s The Five

Fox News’ Greg Gutfeld recently said that liberal activist and actress Janeane Garofalo is “as sensible as she is attractive.” This is just the latest cheap shot from Gutfeld in which he has focused on women’s physical appearance or otherwise stereotyped women since the show’s debut in July.

Gutfeld Repeatedly Goes For The Sexist Comment

Gutfeld: Janeane Garofalo “Is As Sensible As She Is Attractive.” Responding to comments Garofalo made that were critical of the tea party, Gutfeld said: “She is as sensible as she is attractive.” [Fox News, The Five, 9/29/11]

Gutfeld On Solyndra: “This Story Would Be So Much More Interesting If Solyndra Was A Stripper.” Discussing a federal loan guarantee for Solyndra, a solar panel manufacturer that has declared bankruptcy, Gutfeld said:

GUTFELD: Can I just say something? This story would be so much more interesting if Solyndra was a stripper. [Fox News, The Five, 10/4/11]

Gutfeld Declared Himself “A Jon Huntsman Supporter” After Seeing Pictures Of Huntsman’s Daughters. During a discussion of candidates seeking the 2012 Republican presidential nomination, Gutfeld said:

GUTFELD: Can I just tell you? I’ve been so confused about who I want to support in the election and then I was on Twitter and I saw a picture of Jon Huntsman’s family. I am — because these are his daughters — I am now a Jon Huntsman supporter. [Fox News, The Five, 8/19/11]

Gutfeld Twice Compared Government Spending To “A Wife And Her Credit Cards.” Discussing the debt ceiling, Gutfeld said: “That’s the problem with being president: You love raising the debt ceiling. It’s like a wife and her credit cards. Americans have to be the husband that takes the credit card and breaks it up.” He later said of President Obama: “He’s like your wife running around with your credit cards.” [Fox News, The Five, 7/11/11]

Gutfeld Weighed In On Palin’s “Hotness.” Discussing the possibility that Sarah Palin might seek the Republican presidential nomination, co-host Andrea Tantaros said to Gutfeld: “Greg, I know you think that Palin’s hot. Can she win based just on her hotness?” Gutfeld replied: “I’m turned on by her brains.” When co-host Bob Beckel called him a “liar,” Gutfeld responded: “I am a liar. I am lying right now.” [Fox News, The Five, 7/11/11]

Gutfeld: Government Is “Your Mistress.” During a debate over energy efficiency standards for light bulbs, Gutfeld said: “The government is not your mom and dad, it’s your mistress. So you call her — she never calls you, and she never comes to your house.” [Fox News, The Five, 7/11/11]

Gutfeld’s Own Fox Colleague Called Him Out For His “Creepy” Comment About Her Appearance

Fox’s Huddy Called Gutfeld’s Comment About Her Outfit “Real Creepy.” Discussing rental property laws, co-host Juliet Huddy offered Gutfeld the last word in the debate:

HUDDY: Greg, I’ll give you, what, like a five-second answer.

GUTFELD: Uh, I like your top.

HUDDY: On that note. That’s creepy — real creepy. [Fox News, The Five, 8/12/11]

Southern Baptist Pastor Robert Jeffress

Today at the Values Voters Summit, presidential contender and Texas Gov. Rick Perry was introduced to the crowd by one of his most prominent supporters, Robert Jeffress, senior pastor of the First Baptist Church of Dallas. Jeffress is well-known for his bigoted views about gays, Muslims, and Mormons. During his introduction for Perry, he called Planned Parenthood “that slaughterhouse for the unborn.”

Speaking to reporters after Perry’s speech, Jeffress reiterated his well-known view that “Mormonism is a cult” which should essentially disqualify Mitt Romney from consideration among true Christian voters. “As evangelical Christians, we understand that Mormonism is not Christianity,” he said. “The decision for evangelical Christians right now is going to be do we prefer someone who is truly a believer in Jesus Christ or someone…who is a part of a cult.” He admitted “it’s not a politically correct thing to say.”

In response to questions from ThinkProgress about the booing of a gay soldier at the last GOP debate, Jeffress said “there’s good reason for keeping the tradition of not having homosexuals serve in the military.” He made the patently false claim that “70 percent of the gay population” has AIDS. “It’s a fact that it’s a gay disease so there’s a reasonable reason to exclude gays from the military,” he explained, suggesting that gay service members are more likely to spread disease. Watch it:

It’s pretty ludicrous to suggest that there’s a tradition of not having gays in the military — gay service members have simply not been allowed to serve openly and been forced to conceal their identities for fear of being dishonorably discharged.

In the past, Jeffress has claimed that Islam “promotes pedophilia” and that violence by Muslims is “in accordance with what the Quran teaches” because it’s a “violent religion.”

Perry spokesman Mark Miner said in a statement that Perry does not believe Mormonism is a cult.

Congressman From Koch Uninterested In Investigating Koch Industries? Business Deals With Iran

ThinkProgress filed this report from the Values Voters Summit in Washington, DC.

Last week, Bloomberg released a bombshell report on Koch Industries, the oil conglomerate owned by the secretive conservative billionaires David and Charles Koch. The report revealed that Koch Industries subsidiaries were doing business in Iran and using bribes to win contracts elsewhere. The Koch Brothers were apparently alarmed enough about the report’s release that a blogger with extensive ties to the Kochs attempted to pre-but the allegations well before Bloomberg’s release.

Given these damning allegations – Koch Industries admitted the bribes were criminal and the United States has banned trade with Iran since 1995 – ThinkProgress asked the congressman whose district includes Koch Industries, Rep. Mike Pompeo (R-KS), whether he planned to open an investigation into the matter. Pompeo blew off the notion, walking away from reporters rather than answer the question. Despite being asked three times if he planned to open an investigation into Koch Industries’ dealings with Iran, Pompeo was silent, allowing his communications director to block ThinkProgress instead.

KEYES: Are you going to be leading an investigation into Koch Industries’ dealings with Iran?

POMPEO: [Silence.]

Watch it:

It’s not particularly surprising that Pompeo would resist opening an investigation into Koch Industries. His extensive ties to the Koch Brothers have earned him the title, “the congressman from Koch.” When Pompeo was confronted about undue influence that the Kochs have on his office, he responded, “Koch Industries is an amazing business.”

ABC News attempted to ask David Koch this week about the oil tycoon’s business deals in Iran and bribes used by Koch Industries. Like Pompeo, Koch was silent on the matter.

Political, legal experts want release of Justice Dept. memo supporting killing of Anwar al-Awlaki

A bipartisan chorus of political and legal voices is calling on the Obama administration to release a declassified version of the Justice Department memo that provided the legal analysis sanctioning the killing in Yemen last week of Anwar al-Awlaki, a U.S. citizen.

They said that the reasoning behind the extraordinary step of killing an American cannot be kept secret from scrutiny if the public is to continue to support counterterrorism operations. Awlaki was killed in a CIA drone strike.

Solyndra loan deal: Warnings about legality came from within Obama administration

Energy Department officials were warned that their plan to help a failing solar company by restructuring its $535 million federal loan could violate the law and should be cleared with the Justice Department, according to newly obtained e-mails from within the Obama administration.

The e-mails show that Energy Department officials moved ahead anyway with a new deal that would repay company investors before taxpayers if the company defaulted. The e-mails, which were reviewed by The Washington Post, show for the first time concerns within the administration about the legality of the Energy Department’s extraordinary efforts to help Solyndra, the California solar company that went bankrupt Aug. 31.

Obama’s Excuses Are Wearing Thin

Obama’s Excuses Are Wearing Thin
Steve Huntley, Chicago Sun-Times
For years, the ritual response from the White House to the nation’s economic problems was to blame the Bush administration — President Barack Obama inherited this mess. With that excuse wearing thin after nearly three years of his administration and a persistently weak economic pulse, Obama has found a new reason for the country’s woes: Americans grew soft.“This is a great, great country that had gotten a little soft, and we didn’t have the same competitive edge that we needed,” Obama told Orlando, Fla., TV station WESH this week….

Steve Jobs: An Unexpected Appreciation
Michael Malone, Pajamas Media
The man who was arguably the single most influential figure of my generation has left the stage for the last time. I’m amazed that it ended this way. It’s not that the death of Steve Jobs came as a surprise. In fact, it was miracle he lasted so long. Here in Silicon Valley we had a pretty good idea of just how advanced his illness had become. And, knowing a number of Steve’s friends and acquaintances, as well as his neighbors, I had a better idea than most of his state.

Harry Reid Goes Sub-Nuclear
Kevin Drum, Mother Jones
Harry Reid, in a fit of spinefulness, killed off a Senate rule last night. There are really only two things you need to know about this:The rule itself was an obscure and trivial delaying tactic that, until now, neither party had used for decades. It does not directly affect either cloture or the filibuster, so stop drooling.

House GOP in Lockstep Against EPA
Ronald Brownstein, National Journal
In their votes on environmental issues this year, House Republicans from blue places have greens seeing red.Which is to say that GOP legislators from moderate swing areas, including districts that President Obama carried in 2008, are infuriating environmentalists by joining with their conservative colleagues on votes to obliterate an array of federal regulations. That lockstep loyalty sharply departs from the way swing-district Republicans behaved in 1995, the last time the GOP unseated a Democratic House majority. It also represents a high-stakes bet that anxiety about the economy and…
