Pawlenty Claims He’s Barely Campaigned in Iowa
Tim Pawlenty told the Des Moines Register that the reason he’s lagging in the polls is that “this week is the first time that I’ve campaigned in earnest in Iowa.”
The problem: “Pawlenty has made more campaign appearances here than any other candidate except former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum.”
Meanwhile, the New York Times wonders if Pawlenty will be the first candidate to drop out of the presidential race.
Pelosi Gets Private Meeting with Obama
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi will meet with President Barack Obama again, “giving the president a chance to make his case directly to the California Democrat whose caucus is roiling with anger about the prospect of a deficit reduction deal that curbs Social Security and Medicare spending,” the Wall Street Journal reports.
Plouffe Downplays Unemployment Rate
White House adviser David Plouffe told Bloomberg the unemployment rate won’t hurt President Obama’s re-election chances.
Said Plouffe: “The average American does not view the economy through the prism of GDP or unemployment rates or even monthly jobs numbers. People won’t vote based on the unemployment rate, they’re going to vote based on: ‘How do I feel about my own situation? Do I believe the president makes decisions based on me and my family?'”
“Since World War II, no U.S. president has won re-election with a jobless rate above 6%, with the exception of Ronald Reagan, who faced 7.2% unemployment on Election Day in 1984. The median forecast of economists surveyed by Bloomberg puts the unemployment rate at 8.2% in the third quarter of next year.”
