President Obama’s Trust Issues
A.B. Stoddard, The Hill
You never get a second chance to make a first impression, at least not in this economy. As the Obama agenda tanks in the polls, critics rail against the administration's suit against Arizona's new immigration law, the healthcare reform law, new financial-services regulation they claim will further stifle credit and therefore the economy and an ill-advised approach to Middle East policy, among other complaints. Yet as the Obama administration nears the 18-month mark and wades into Bushian unpopularity, it is becoming clear that all roads lead back to the stimulus. After President…
Voters Like Obama, Not His Policies
Alex Altman, Time
As he juggles the demands of a moribund recovery, multiple foreign conflicts and the reverberations of a catastrophic oil spill, President Obama still has more supporters than opponents. In a new TIME poll, 49% of respondents say they approve of the President's performance, compared to 45% who disapprove. Four out of five Americans have little or no confidence in the bill, according to a Bloomberg Poll. Respondents also said the plan is more likely to help the…
Democrats Tip Toe Around Bush Tax Cuts
As Obama Kowtows, Unions Eye Private Sector
Michael Barone, Examiner
One of the interesting things about the Obama administration is the strange dominance of labor unions. Yes, Barack Obama and other Democratic leaders do owe the unions something: Unions gave $400 million to Democrats in the 2008 campaign cycle, and they expect to get something in return. What they haven't gotten out of the Democratic Congress is the thing they wanted most — the card check bill that would effectively abolish the secret ballot in unionization elections. Unions now represent only 7 percent of private-sector workers, the lowest percentage since the early 1930s. Union…
