Over this past month, it has become a customary sight at town halls across the country to witnessangry protestersmouthingright-wing talking points against health reform. But yesterday, in a town hall forum in Phoenix, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) was confronted by an attendee who voiced passionate anger in support of health reform:
Why don’t I have the health insurance you’ve got! Because I’m paying for it! And I’m paying for the President of the United States’ health insurance and Congress’ health insurance. Why don’t I have that! I’m your employer! I’m your employer! You work for me, and you’ve got a better health insurance plan than I’ve got!
Federal employees have excellent health care because they are provided an array of affordable choices. Obama is pushing to expand choice for all Americans by creating a national health insurance exchange — modeled on the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program — “where Americans can one-stop shop for a health care plan, compare benefits and prices, and choose the plan that’s best for them, in the same way that Members of Congress and their families can.”
“One of these options,” Obama said, “needs to be a public option. It will give people a broader range of choices and inject competition into the health care market so that we can force waste out of the system and keep the insurance companies honest.” But McCain adamantly opposes the public option.
Last night, McCain told Fox News’ Sean Hannity that America just “is not ready” for quality “government-run health care.”

In a recent radio interview, Rep. Carol Shea-Porter (D-NH) made the seemingly-innocuous statement that the federal highway system, as well as federal laws ensuring safe drugs and safe airplanes, are constitutional. Nevertheless, Shea-Porter is now under attack by “tenther” activists who believe that virtually everything the federal government does is unconstitutional:
Author and historian David Barton, the president of WallBbuilders, [sic] says Shea-Porter’s comments reflect her view that Washington government should run everything. He notes that both the Ninth and Tenth Amendments say anything that is not explicitly covered in the Constitution belongs to the states and to the people.
“All of those issues belong to the states and the people. Healthcare is not a federal issue. It is a state and people issue — the same with transportation. The Constitution does say that the federal government can take care of what are called the post roads — those on which the mail travels — but outside of that, states are responsible for their own highways, their own roads, their own county, local, state roads,” he notes. “And her comment about, ‘Well, the Constitution doesn’t cover drug use and drug abuse’ — yes it does, and that is under the criminal justice issues that belong to the
As ThinkProgress previously reported, conservatives are increasingly enraptured with tentherism, which claims that landmark federal programs such as Medicare, Social Security, the VA health system and the G.I. Bill are violations of the 10th Amendment — and many leading conservative officials are determined to impose the tentherism on the country. Rep. Michelle Bachmann (R-MN) is a tenther, as are Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) and Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC). Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas embraces tenther claims that the federal minimum wage and the federal ban on whites-only lunch counters, among other things, are unconstitutional.
Indeed, even federal highways opponent Barton is no small figure in conservative politics; Barton is one of six “experts” tasked with rewriting Texas’ public school textbooks to teach a right-wing alternative history to Texan children. Apparently, Barton and his fellow tenthers also want to rewrite the Constitution.

GOP pollster Frank Luntz claimed on Fox News’ Hannity that Democratic health reform proposals would “cut Medicare reimbursement,” which would lead to “denial of coverage” because “[i]f you don’t give doctors the money, they won’t do the procedures.” However, the House tri-committee health reform bill actually increases projected physician reimbursements by $245 billion compared to current law.
From the August 25 edition of Fox News’ Hannity:
SEAN HANNITY (host): It used to be health care reform. Now it’s health insurance reform. They keep saying choice and competition. So you can see that they’re applying this — as this has failed, they’re using the new terminology, right?
LUNTZ: Oh, it’s fascinating to watch. But you notice he said cost control. What he should have said was ending waste, fraud, abuse, and mismanagement.
Now, here’s the problem when you get to the details. Medicare is a great example. Barack Obama never said that he’s going to cut Medicare benefits for seniors. But what he did say is that he’s going to cut Medicare reimbursement. And this is something I challenged the organization Media Matters, because they simply got it wrong. It’s like they’ve got high school interns doing their research.
There’s a difference between Medicare benefits and reimbursement. But I say to everyone over age 65, do you understand what cutting Medicare reimbursement means?
HANNITY: Right.
LUNTZ: Less doctors will want to take Medicare recipients; less hospitals will welcome them. It’s going to mean denial of coverage. That’s exactly what a reimbursement does. If you don’t give doctors the money, they won’t do the procedures.
Luntz: “cutting Medicare reimbursement” means not “giv[ing] doctors the money”
Luntz suggested proposed Medicare reimbursement cuts would reduce doctor payments. During the August 25 edition of Hannity, Luntz asserted: “[D]o you understand what cutting Medicare reimbursement means? Less doctors will want to take Medicare recipients; less hospitals will welcome them. It’s going to mean denial of coverage. That’s exactly what a reimbursement does. If you don’t give doctors the money, they won’t do the procedures.”
