China Takes the Bronze in GDP

China Takes the Bronze in GDP

Shanghai Scape

After reconfiguring its output figures, China has finally found itself on the medal podium for gross domestic product, ousting Germany from its role as third largest economy in the world. China’s economy has grown tenfold in the past 30 years, and its development, while marveled at, worries many environmental, human rights and labor activists.

The Guardian:

China overtook Germany to become the world’s third largest economy yesterday after revising its figures for output growth. The Chinese economy has grown tenfold in three decades and grew 13% rather than 12% in 2007, Beijing said, putting it behind only the United States and Japan in terms of gross domestic product.

The revision raised the Chinese gross domestic product to 25.7 trillion yuan, the national statistics bureau said, or $3.5tn at 2007 exchange rates. That would be ahead of Germany’s 2007 GDP of €2.4tn, or $3.3tn.

The fact that China has 1.3 billion people, though, means that GDP per head – a typical measure of individual wealth – remains well behind leading economies. Germany’s 85 million people were far ahead of China in this category in 2007 at €28,200 euros per head ($38,800).

A Truncated Presidential Honeymoon?

A Truncated Presidential Honeymoon?
It was fairly common chatter from congressional Democrats in Washington during the autumn months of the presidential campaign that while Barack Obama was almost certain to win, in 2009 policy would be driven from the House speaker’s office. While I didn’t doubt that the congressional Democrats would try to lead Obama around by the nose, I rather doubted that Obama would cooperate. When a fellow gets himself elected president, he is inclined to want to try his hand at some real governing. And while I predicted in a postelection November column — against conventional wisdom — that Obama might well have a fairly short honeymoon, I confess I am surprised at how soon, how vigorously and how publicly the congressional Democrats are flexing their muscles.

Biden Wants to Scale Back Vice Presidency

Biden Wants to Scale Back Vice Presidency
“While most incoming vice presidents arrive eager to expand the influence of the office,” Vice President-elect Biden “faces the unusual conundrum of figuring out how to scale it back,” the New York Times reports.

He wants to “restore the balance,” as he put it, after the unprecedented assertion of authority by Vice President Dick Cheney.

Said Biden: “The proof of the pudding is in the eating. The Bush-Cheney relationship hasn’t tasted very good. Not a single person you can name for me… Look at me, now — a single one can tell you that the pudding has tasted good. Not one. Name me one serious person, liberal, conservative, Democrat, Republican.”
