WASHINGTON (AFP) – US President George W. Bush and his wife will attend a ceremony next week to award a Congress medal to exiled Tibetan leader, the Dalai Lama, despite the risk of angering China, the White House said Wednesday.
“The president and Mrs Laura Bush will attend the ceremony,” national security council spokesman Gordon Johndroe told AFP.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will award the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian honor the legislature can bestow, to the 72-year-old Dalai Lama at Capitol Hill on Oct 17, her office said.
“The speaker will be joined by President George W. Bush and (veteran Democratic Senator) Robert Byrd in presenting the award,” it said.
