An Open Letter To The John Edwards Campaign

Mike O'MccarthyDear David Bonior:

As you know, many years ago I appeared before the Veteran’s committee and testified specifically about the abuse and neglect suffered by veterans in general and Viet Nam vets in particular. And while I confined my remarks to that subject, I was very conscious of the underlying causes of both the war itself and its manifest impact on American life. Then it was to contain the international communism’s terror. Today it’s to fight Islamic terror. Both, may I suggest, bear a direct causal relation to the foreign policy of the United States and those other European, “developed” nation’s colonial and imperial penetration, occupation, and inappropriate exploitation of “third world” nation’s resources and people.

As a nation we face a worse scenario today because we barely addressed the vet’s issues and did nothing to correct the circumstances which led to the necessity of the hunger strike. That is, an illegal war based on an imperialist foreign policy. Subsequently we relied on Bill Clinton to takeover from where Republican Ronald Reagan had driven us. Clinton simply facilitated an even worse arrangement for our government and the corporations which were moving to own it, as they do this day. Thus, I write you today because we are at another pivotal stage in the history of our nation and I would like clarification on where the Edwards’ campaign stands on those and the following issues.

PS: This letter was forwarded to Audrey Waters, press secretary to candidate John Edwards with a promise of a response within 2 hours on Friday. Since that time, no response if forthcoming. That suggests that the Edwards’ campaign has chosen not to address what I believe are the central questions that need to be answered and positions that need to be taken before any candidate is accepted as a “change” candidate. It appears that what we will get from the Democratic Party is the same “other wing” of the corporate state poltical apparatus. More imperialism, less protection for workers here and around the world, more suffering and death and more money in the pocket of the corporate class.

Please don’t forget the old and sage adage: If you keep doing the same thing over and over again and expect different results, you are insane.

It is interesting on your’e take on the VA administration. I am a blue collar worker tha spent 6 years in the Navy. I am not avaible for any VA benefits because the liberal democrats declared al wars or actions I was in as police actions, and they think the republicans rob from the public, the democrats just steal in denied benefits!!
