More on the Daily Kos-CIA Connection

Posted in Latest Stories & Articles by H.L., Main Blog (All Posts) on August 11th, 2007 8:00 am by HL

As I reported here last week Markos Moulitsas Zuniga, the Millionaire behind the largest “liberal website” on the planet Daily Kos, who grew up as a Reagan youth, joined the military, and as I speculated was possibly a member of the CIA; did indeed sign up for the CIA, but claims that he decided not to join because he didn’t want to live in Washington, and he wanted to join the Howard Dean campaign. umm hmmm. Here is Markos, as reported by My Left Wing.com

Here’s a little secret I don’t think I’ve ever written about: But in 2001, I was unemployed, underemployed, unemployed. You know I was in that . . You all have been there “dot com” people? Kinda like, in between jobs, doin’ a little contract work and . . . kinda. So, you know. That’s where I was: in this really horrible netherworld of ‘will I make rent next month’ and . . .
So, I applied to the CIA and I went all the way to the end, I mean it was to the point where I was going to sign papers to become Clandestine Services. And it was at that point that the Howard Dean campaign took off and I had to make a decision whether I was gonna kinda join the Howard Dean campaign, that whole process, or was I was going to become a spy.

As I have pointed out, it’s strange that the two biggest biggest liberal websites are owned and operated by former Republicans, also strange how Kos, and Ariana Huffington, the owner of Huffington Post, are constantly being called on by the mainstream media to provide “progressive views” for the news. My Left Wing Picks up The Story

Last year, in a piece Markos wrote for the Cato (libertarian) Institute, Markos acknowledged that the spent the 1980’s as a Reagan Republican. MARKOS’ CATO ARTICLE, Yes, “Progessive” Markos of DailyKos was a Reagan Republican!!!!!!!!
How did Markos achieve this stunning metamorphosis in just a few short years? Actually, nobody knows and Markos isn’t telling. He has told interviewers, improbably, that he last voted for the Republicans in 1992, because he suddenly realized that they didn’t support “states rights” as strongly as he would have liked.

So the guy is a lifelong Republican with CIA ties, and he suddenly decides he is going to do a 180 over states rights? That seems like a pretty minor reason to make a complete life change. States rights is pretty far down the list of importance for Republicans, I mean there is endless war, the never ending fight to screw the poor, the laborers, the middle class, the soldiers, gays, immigrants, and basically anyone who wasn’t born rich. If you asked most Republicans their opinion on states rights they wouldn’t have an intelligent comment about it if they even knew what it was.

Kos has been accused of some very Republican like tactics when it comes to dealing with people who are against him. Kos is in alliance with the progressive blog mydd.com, and that site has done some strong arming of people who dare to disparage the mighty kos. My Left Wing points out one example

But there is so much to say about this. I was banned from participation in MyDD and notified in writing that the banning was because I violated the unspoken rule against criticizing Markos Moulitsas

So Now Kos is the darling of the mainstream media, you know those guys who will never stop licking Bush’s crack no matter how low his ratings go. The guys that get up there with a straight face every night and report on everything Bush as if he is the most beloved statesman this nation has ever seen. Take a look at Kos schedule for the next couple of days as reported by Kos himself.

I’ll be on Meet the Press tomorrow morning for a “debate” with Harold Ford of the DLC. I’ll be on Charlie Rose on Monday night. And I’ll be back on the Colbert Report on Wednesday evening, where I’ll be getting my ass handed to me by the master himself.
And today, as OneCrankyDom already noted, Susan G and I have an op-ed in the Washington Post.

When I did my interview with Henry Waxman the other day, a blogger put up on Daily Kos the segment where I asked Waxman about hearings for Sibel Edmonds. The “Kossacks” as they are called were all waiting for Henry to schedule the hearings about a case that involves drug running, trading state secrets, trading nuclear information with Turkey, and Israel, and involving both Democrats and Republicans. They all thought Henry was just biding his time. When they heard Waxman tell me in the interview that he had no opinion about Edmonds, and no intention of scheduling hearings for a state department employee and FBI whistleblower, some of the Kossacks began to have meltdowns proclaiming that this was the last straw, and they now finally see that Democracy is BS, and the whole thing was just a joke. That’s because they have been buying into that whole Kos mindset of working within the system, of lets just sit back and wait for the democrats to save us while the Republicans run roughshod over the US treasury, and the American people for 8 years. Welcome to the world of reality people.

Addendum: I want to clarify one point, many of the readers of Daily Kos are not just sitting back and waiting, they actually make calls to members of congress and send emails. My problem with many of them was not that they do nothing, but in their wholehearted belief in a system that they are now just starting to realize is not going to work. So once again, Welcome to reality people

“CIA ties, ” well radical Ray McGovern who gave the daily briefings for Bush 41 when he was a CIA agent, and who gets arrested with Cindy Sheehan all the time, now that’s real, “CIA ties.” Phillip Agee, further to the Left (he is a Fidelista in Cuba now) than Ray, was a CIA agent for decades, and doesn’t get this treatment from leftists or liberals.
“CIA ties, ” well Kos just interviewed with The Agency. I interviewed w/KFC once does that make me an agent of Col. Sanders though i didn’t accept a job that wasn’t offered for a jr. mgr.?
What is this left purism anyway? Only those who have always been lefties need be accepted? Hell, when I was in college and in an organization full of Marxist-Leninists, my sister voted for Reagan. Now, she is a little to my Left on some issues. If I had stopped talking to her when I was full of jargon about Hegemony and Dependent Capitalism and Contradictions Between The Base and the Superstructure, like Marxists do, she probably would have never moved away from Reaganism.

  6. Winter Patriot Says:

    Hi again HL

First things first … I always think it’s rude to do an inside joke in public and now having called you “Teddy” I guess I should explain to your readers …

I have a late-in-life step-brother — we were young adults when we met — named Teddy. He’s a joy and a half — free spirit, free thinker, great wit, not afraid to tick people off if he thinks they’re sleepwalking, often has an angle on something that seems way out there until you think about it for a while … he’s of Norwegian (and some Baltic) heritage and would have made a perfect Viking, but he was born a thousand years too late and instead he’s an ex-Marine who says things like “capitalism doesn’t work unless there’s a war going” … anyway when I first started reading HL, I thought “this guy SO reminds me of Teddy” and once I accidentally called HL “Teddy”, which was kind of embarrassing, and ever since then we laugh about it.

Back to the original topic for a moment, if that’s ok… a couple of comments and questions for Teddy or anybody else, if I may…

    * Do you have a link to the DK thread you were referring to, where the Kossacks started melting down?

    * Do you know why your link from My Left Wing starts with a disclaimer? Is that supposed to be funny? And/or do you have a link to that piece in its original context?

    * I’ve been following Sibel’s case for a long time and it sure was weird how Ashcroft slapped the gag order on her, retro-actively classifying testimony she had given to congress ( and thus “removing” it from the “public record” — WTF?????)

Sibel’s FBI stories all trace back to the lobbying group American Turkish Council, and it has never made any sense to me why the administration would be so hot to protect Turkey … later it sort of slipped out that the people running the ATC also lobby for Israel. Hmmm.

And it has crossed my mind that perhaps Henry Waxman is happy investigating what happened to Joe Wilson and Valerie Plame, because that might lead to the White House; and he’s happy investigating what happened to Jessica Lynch and Pat Tillman, because that might lead to the Pentagon; but he’s not about to go investigating what happened to Sibel Edmonds, because that might lead to Tel Aviv. Hmmm. I guess that’s not really a question, is it?

    * or as one of my readers said, “Let me tell you how it will be … cause I’m the WaxMan… yeah - I’m the WaxMax”

    * or as another reader said, “The FBI started pulling that string and found out it led to their shorts, so they figured they’d better stop pulling it before their doink fell out.”

    * Anyone interested in more information on the Sibel Edmonds case should read Luke Ryland and here are some good places to start:

Monosyllabic Fish | Kill The Messenger | Let Sibel Speak | Wot Is It Good 4 | Disclose, Denny!

    * I don’t mean to be presumptuous or anything, but I’m quite certain I speak for Luke and Sibel when I say THANKS AGAIN to HL for getting WaxMan on the record about this … as you may know, Luke mounted a campaign to pressure WaxMan on behalf of Sibel a few months ago; I got a report from one of my readers saying she had spoken to WaxMan’s office where a staffer told her the phones were ringing off the wall, all saying more or less the same thing, and eventually Luke called off the dogs and it was WaxMan’s move and he said “I’ll let you know” … but since then he hasn’t said a word … so it was really great that you got him on the record. Even though the news is not very surprising to me, it may have some potential educational value in the land of Kos, the “ex”, “almost”, clandestine services guy.

    * There’s a lot more on Sibel’s story at please don’t read my blog. If you’re not interested, don’t click here.

    * I’ve finally linked you on my sidebar. Can’t figure out why it took me so long to do that, but better now than never, right? Now probably tens and tens of readers will flock over to your site and swamp your server.

    * Thanks again, Teddy, and keep up the good work. ;-)

    best wishes as always

  9. liquified viscera Says:

YO! Visitor from the land of the Winter Patriot here.

Just a quick question or maybe request for clarification. You said —

    +++++++++++++++++++

“That’s because they have been buying into that whole Kos mindset of working within the system, of lets just sit back and wait for the democrats to save us while the Republicans run roughshod over the US treasury, and the American people for 8 years.”

    +++++++++++++++++++

I wonder if you aren’t forgetting a rather significant part of the equation.

It seems to me that from 2000-2004 there was a significant Democrat presence in the Congress, and from 2004-present there has been a Democrat MAJORITY in the Congress, and yet during that whole time, 98% of those Democrats have given Mr Bush exactly what he has asked for.

Is it fair to say this is all the Republicans’ fault?

It’s not fair from where I’m sitting, but I might be missing some salient facts that you’re assuming to be operative here.

From where I sit it would appear that what we’ve been suffering since January 2001 has been imposed upon the American people in a bipartisan effort (happily bipartisan, I’d add), which leads me to believe we don’t have innocent Democrats in the Congress.

I’d agree to an exception carved out for Cynthia McKinney from 2000-2004, and for Dennis Kucinich 2000-present, but apart from those two people, I don’t see how you can claim that the Democrats aren’t sharing in the culpability.

  10. HL Says:

LV, thanks for stopping by, if you check around on the site you will see that I slam the Democrats all the time for giving Bush everything he wants. I have also behind Dennis for President since 2004. Say hi to WP for me.

  11. William Bournes Says:

It would be nice if the paid government manipulators would indentify themselves as such, you know wear one of those stylish blue windbreakers that say FBI or DEA or in Kos’s case CIA on the back. I guess nothing says validity like having your profession infilitrated by the CIA, bloggers you have arrived. Kos always seemed dubious to me, but then again I understand critical thinking - he does have that flexible moral vibe the government seeks and he’s young and dumb, so he probably fits all the criteria. When he says he walked away from an employment contract with the company, I think it means they pay him as a freelancer, but he still gets benefits. Good to see our tax dollars at work, makes me proud to know all my labor until May goes for these sort of shennanigans.

Kos is an example of what a CIA agent actually looks like. The real agents arent guys who you can prove are in it. He is an “opinion leader” his job is to keep the left v.s. right catfight going, make sure they are fighting about what they are supposed to be fighting about and missing the ball. 18. Francis L. Holland Says:

After Stu Piddy at MyLeftWing informed us that there was an audiotape in which Markos C.Alberto Moulitsas Zúñiga confessed to having spent two years at the CIA, I spent about three hours with that audio tape and wrote a transcript of the part where MAMZ discussed and laughed about his involvement with the CIA. “Here’s a little known secret,” he said.

What strikes me even now is that when the news about MAMZ’s CIA involvement came out, there were people running around the blogs saying that there was really nothing wrong or strange about working with the CIA. Now, this was news to me, because I have never, ever had a personal conversation with anybody who told me that they or anyone they knew had worked for the CIA ever. CIA people “assassinating labor leaders” as MAMZ joked about in his speech, was never anything I thought it was appropriate to laugh and joke about.

Obviously, MAMZ exists as an emissary from the CIA build support or lessen opposition to the CIA. The CIA must have decided that among it’s other propaganda and psyops efforts, it needed a better reputation in the United States. Mom, apple pie, and the CIA.

Well after writing the transcript of MAMZ CIA confession, I posted an original piece of extensive research and writing called, The Indictment of Markos C.A. Moulitsas ZÚÑIGA by Justice and History (Updated with Additional Information and Counts)

  19. KOS and 9/11 Says:

Maybe this explains why Moulitsas has put a blanket censoring on KOS re discussin of 9/11 issues. 9/11 is still lthe centerpiece of the Bush years and the horrors that ensued. The 9/11 truthers are getting closer and closer to the facts. They perpetrators must be getting nervous.

And in support of the thesis of elite controls, it is obvious that we really do have two variants on a single political theme. (No, the two parties are not the same. They have some differences, but the differences are cosmetic.) The powers that be in each party trade musical chairs every cycle but the policies, decisions and results always turn out the same. Robin Hood in reverse. The problems and eventual collapse of the American Empire are embedded in the history and structure of the place. In the end, the American population is only 5% of the world total, and the American elite is a small fraction of that. How long do you think the rest of the world is going to put up with being bullied and exploited? A dying empire is not a pretty sight.

  21. Finch Says:

I think there are many sincere people that post on Daily Kos, (which can make controlled opposition sites all the more insidious), but I have wondered about the agenda of the ownership of the site. It was very divisive during the primaries, and though I was not overwhelmed by HRC, I suspect she would have been less of a patsy for various big money and hawkish interests than Obama has turned out to be.

I also noticed that it seems that you cannot breathe a word of criticism about the CIA on Daily Kos without your thread being thrown into the ‘conspiracy theory’ trash bin. This is an example of a historically documented wrongdoing that was effectively censored on Daily Kos that way:
