Bush administration under a cloud

AP
Excerpt
A rundown of Bush appointees who left under a cloud or face conflict-of-interest allegations

_Scooter Libby, former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney, was convicted of perjury and obstruction of justice in a grand jury investigation into the outing of CIA operative Valerie Plame. His trial also implicated top political adviser Karl Rove and Cheney in a campaign to discredit her husband, Iraq war critic and retired ambassador Joe Wilson (news, bio, voting record). Libby, who plans an appeal, is awaiting a June 5 sentencing.

• Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is fighting to hold onto his job in the face of congressional investigations into his role in the firing of eight U.S. attorneys. Two top aides have resigned in the investigation into whether the firings were politically motivated. Emails and other evidence released by the Justice Deparment suggest that Rove played a part in the process. Other e-mails, sent on Republican party accounts, either have disappeared or were erased.

• Paul Wolfowitz, president of the World Bank and a former deputy defense secretary, acknowledged he helped arrange a large pay raise for his female companion when she was transferred to the State Department but remained on the bank payroll. The incident intensified calls at the bank for his resignation.

• J. Steven Griles, an oil and gas lobbyist who became deputy Interior Secretary J., last month became the highest-ranking Bush administration official convicted in the Jack Abramoff influence-peddling scandal, pleading guilty to obstructing justice by lying to a Senate committee about his relationship with the convicted lobbyist. Abramoff repeatedly sought Griles’ intervention at Interior on behalf of Indian tribal clients.

  1. Bill Says:

4 people are all you can come up with HL. How many people either quit, quit and left the country, or died in all of Clintons scandels. Alot more than 4.

  2. anon Says:

Genius, try clicking the link and actually reading the story. There are a lot more than 4 discussed. Dummy.

  3. Bill Says:

Right so you can read anon there are about 10 and that still doesn’t come close to the number that were involved in the Clinton scandels. So you still want to battle whits anon. HL is grasping at straws to try and make Bush look bad and to support his claim that Bush is the worst President ever and still can’t do it. That title is still left to Carter and about 5 other Democrat Presidents. The most recent “worst” Republican President is Nixon and that is the Historians saying that look it up. It’s not Reagan or Bush it’s Carter. Better yet ask people that remember back that far and they will tell you that Carter was the worst. So try to spin it any way you want the fact is that the most recent worst republican president is nixon. Not reagan, bush, or anyone else. So the Democrats have that title locked up.
Oh and thanks for calling me a Genius anon I have never had anyone be that nice to me before.

  4. i hate me for my freedoms Says:

Bush sucks. How long will it take you 23 percenters to figure out our President can barely read?
I can’t say I blame the Bushies for wanting Big Boss Daddy to throw his Texas sized temper tantrums when the cameras are on. They only help the message sink in: US Citizens are to serve at the pleasure of the President.

Hey Christian Coalition have you figure out yet that God put Bush in power because he wishes to punish your pride and arrogance?

  5. Bill Says:

    Worst President in History?

(The following appeared in the Durham, NC local paper as a letter to the editor.
Please forward to all on your list as this will put things in perspective:)

Liberals claim President Bush shouldn’t have started this war.

They complain about his prosecution of it.

One liberal recently claimed Bush was the worst president in U.S. history.

Let’s clear up one point: President Bush didn’t start the war on terror.
Try to remember, it was started by terrorists BEFORE 9/11.
Let’s look at the “worst” president and mismanagement claims.

FDR led us into World War II.
Germany never attacked us: Japan did.
From 1941-1945, 450,000 lives were lost, an average of 112,500 per year.

Truman finished that war and started one in Korea.
    North Korea never attacked us.
From 1950-1953, 55,000 lives were lost, an average of 18,333 per year.

John F. Kennedy started the Vietnam conflict in 1962.
    Vietnam never attacked us.

Johnson turned Vietnam into a quagmire.
From 1965-1975, 58,000 lives were lost, an average! e of 5,800 per year.

Clinton went to war in Bosnia without UN or French consent.
    Bosnia never attacked us.
He was offered Osama bin Laden’s head on a platter three times by Sudan and did nothing.
Osama has attacked us on multiple occasions.
Over 2,900 lives lost on 9/11.

In the two years since terrorists attacked us, President Bush has liberated two countries, crushed the Taliban, crippled al-Qaida, put nuclear inspectors in Lybia, Iran and North Korea without firing a shot, captured a terrorist who slaughtered 300,000 of his own people.
We lost 600 soldiers, an average of 300 a year.
Bush did all this abroad while not allowing another terrorist attack at home.

Worst president in history? Come on!

The Democrats are complaining about how long the war is taking, but…

It took less time to take Iraq than it took Janet Reno to take the Branch Davidian compound.
That was a 51 day operation.

We’ve been looking for evidence of chemical weapons in Iraq for less time than it took Hillary Clinton to find the Rose Law Firm billing records.

It took less time for the 3rd Infantry Division and the Marines to destroy the Medina Republican Guard than it took Teddy Kennedy to call the police after his Oldsmobile sank at Chappaquiddick.

It took less time to take Iraq than it took to count the votes in Florida!!!!

  6. i hate me for my freedoms Says:

Once again Bill distorts the facts to his liking.

Japan, Germany and Italy each declared war on the United States before the United States declared war on them respectively. FDR led us through the war. He didn’t start any of it.

The Korean war was started by an invasion from North Korea into South Korea. The US response was part of a UN coalition, UNSC resolution 82, but I guess it’s not a coalition if the Bushies aren’t in charge according to Bill. The GI’s and Marines were ready to come home that winter just before the Chinese launched a surprise attack, which would then add another two and a half years of war. Not according to Bill…Truman the lib started it.

I could easily continue using Wikipedia and history books from my collection to continue pointing out FACTS to Bill but what’s the use? He obviously doesn’t read much. He’d rather ignore facts and call them lib bias, then make up his own history in a sad attempt to hide his intellectual laziness. He’s so lazy he just cuts and pastes someone else’s distortions and passes it on without even verifying its contents. Bill can’t imagine a world where newspapers distort the truth for Bush, and that’s what political masterminds like Karl Rove are counting on.

Who has forgotten the day when the general public knew more about the Superdome by watching CNN and Fox News than the President of the United States and his creation, the color-happy Dept of Homeland Security? Or the day when Bush first flew over 500 miles of floodland and death, but continued on to the White House? Who knows anyone else who, in this productive day and age, has racked up over 400 days of vacation in the last 6 years, let alone a wartime president as such?

  7. Douglas Says:

I hate me for my freedoms— Bill never said FDR started the war he said that FDR led us into it there is a difference. Japan declared war on us on 12/07/41 by attacking peral habor. We reurned their declaration of war 12/08/41 Germany, and Italy decared war on us on12/11/41.
the war on terror was not started by us it was brought to us during Thomas Jefferson time by atacking our merchant ships and inslaveing our men. this web site is http://www.strike-the-route.com/52/younga/younga7.html (for those of you who have no idea of what a book is)
truman may not have “started” the korean conflict but he sure as hell got us involved in it,so he did start our conflict with them.
JFK did not start Veitnam he just got us involved in it.
As for Bill not reading or doing his research who was it that found the facts on the Iraq liberation act. and posted them it was not HL i’ll tell you that.
Bill has a masters in history so i would have to say that he does know what he is talking about

  8. Douglas Says:

The fact that you block Bill if prof that you just want to push your beliefs on everyone and don’t git a rats ass about the real truth. i thought that this was a page for debate but i guess i was totaly wrong

  9. Bill Says:

Another liberal want to fight the facts and turn what I say around. First off Japan declared war on the US at 6a.m. West coast time on Dec. 8 1941. Germany and Italy declared war on the US on Dec. 11 1941 at which time we decalred war on them so that is a wash. You are just enforcing what I said about FDR I never said he started WWII. As to the ” Korean War” if you were so smart than you would have known that it was not a was it was a police action, so I guess your books are wrong on that as well. As for the US being involved it could have taken the same postion that the France and Canada have taken on Iraq and just sat it out and bitched like your doing now.
As to my intellectual laziness I don’t have a problem researching things and finding the facts but that can not be said for some of the people that post here along with HL who trys to post speaches and other things off as fact.

  10. i hate me for my freedoms Says:

The text above says it all:

You imply that the US invaded Germany preemptively with this statemtent “Germany never attacked us”. Really? The U-boats didn’t torpedo American shipping in the Atlantic before Op Torch? I guess chivalry wasn’t dead in Nazi Germany. My friend’s grandpa suffered injuries during Op Torch when his troop carrier was torpedoed before he even set foot in Morocco. Must have been the Barbary Coast Pirates in the pre-war on terror eh? Also the text above explicitly states that Truman started the Korean “war” and you can read it for yourself.

Also this article equates mismanagement of war in terms of lives lost which is very misleading and compares apples and oranges. Nowhere are the numbers of actual enlisted men are included. For example Iraq has less than 200,000 enlisted men and women of which over 3000 have died, yet Vietnam had over 2.5 million enlisted men there, half of whom were regularly exposed to attack, and in that duration 58,000 US soldiers died. Knowing the number of people involved gives the reader a little perspective.

Mismanagement is measured in wasted resources. The financial cost of the war on terror, adjusted for inflation, is already equivalent to the costs of fighting in Vietnam. Also the numbers totally neglect over 2500 service men and women who have died since the fall of Saddam and the 20000 wounded and amputees.

These numbers are all set up to make Bush look like a genius. Makes one wonder why he fired all those generals in the last two years, why others are threatening to quit, and none will accept his dreaded title of ‘war czar’.

  11. anon Says:

Well said i hate. And don’t forget the military casualty numbers aren’t even worse because we’ve contracted out this war to the highest bidder. 800 contractors killed, 3300 injured. (Well, actually, there was no bidding, but that’s another issue…)

  12. Buck Says:

Ex-Clinton aide says Bill lost the nuclear codes
    Paul Bedard
    Posted 3/16/03
Former President Clinton lost the codes to nuclear war the day the Monica Lewinsky affair broke, was MIA in the fall of 1998 when a decision was needed on the killing of Osama bin Laden, and was “too busy watching a golf match” to OK a 1996 bombing mission in Iraq, says a blockbuster new book by Clinton’s former military aide. Lt. Col. Robert Patterson, who carried the nuclear “football” from May 1996 to May 1998, crosses a line no other “mil aide” has before in condemning his commander in chief in Dereliction of Duty: The Eyewitness Account of How Bill Clinton Compromised America’s National Security. “This story had to be told.” But a Clinton national security aide, William Danvers, tells us Clinton was never “unavailable for key” decisions and didn’t jeopardize U.S. security. One story: The day the Lewinsky scandal broke, Clinton was to trade in his “biscuit” with the nuclear launch codes. But they were missing. “We never did get them back,” says Patterson. Then there’s bin Laden: Clinton ducked calls from the Situation Room to OK a Tomahawk attack in 1998, then waffled until it was too late.

This nation could have been nuclear attacked and what was Clinton doing? He was keeping his head planted firmly up the donkey’s ass solidifying his position as a piss poor commander and cheif and the worst president these United states has ever seen! EVER!!!!

  13. kevin Says:

war means we are right and guess what we are right and far number go how much is your freedoom worth. i would die for it but only a if you hl vote for bush to get a 3rd term.

  14. Bill Says:

i hate me for my freedoms..
I guess you can’t read. No were in there did I imply that the US invaded Germany preemptively. And your “facts” about Op Torch are so wrong it isn’t funny. Op Torch was launched in Nov. 1942 that was 11 months after Japan, Germany, and Italy all declared war on the US. So your facts there are way off.

Now on to you “facts” about Vietnam.
“Vietnam had over 2.5 million enlisted men there, half of whom were regularly exposed to attack, and in that duration 58,000 US soldiers died.”
This is another one that is so wrong that it isn’t funny. the highest troop count in Vietnam was 543,400 in April 1969. That is a long way off of your 2.5 million. I don’t know were you are comming up with that number unless you are counting people that live there. The number of troops in Iraq right now is 135000 so that is a quarter of the troops in Iraq. So take the 5800 that died a year in Vietnam and devide it by 4 you come up with 1450 troops died each year and how many have we lost in Iraq. Not to mention that Vietnam went on for 11 years and we have only been in Iraq 4.
As to your claim of the numbers being set up to make Bush look good. Try again. If you knew how to research anything than you would know that your figures on Vietnam and your dates on Op Torch were wrong. That is sad. Try to use an operation that was in 1942 as a reference point to 1941. Next time you want to post something get your parents permission and go back to school so you will learn something quit skipping calss.

  15. Bill Says:

Hey kevin you don’t have to worry about having to go to war than because HL would probibly go to war before he would vote Bush in for a third term.

  16. kevin Says:

Damn, him I want to go to WAR. it is my duty asa a man and as a born and raised american.
PLEASE PERSIDENT. BUSH bring back the the draft. I WANT TO FIRST IN LINE.

  17. HL Says:

Hey kevin, there doesn’t have to be a draft for you to go to Iraq, just head over to your local recruiting office. Or is there a reason they won’t take you???? low IQ??? or is there some kind of physical problem?

  18. anon Says:

Kevin…sign up!! I think it must be an IQ problem if he thinks he can’t get into the military without a draft…

  19. Douglas Says:

No kevin i don’t think you have a IQ prob you are probliy to damn short to see over the sights lol

  20. Bill Says:

Kevin. You would never see HL enlist and he would run for the border if they started the draft. HL you have no problem telling someone else to go and die for you why don’t you go die for your country. Never mind I have seen what you look like and the Army wouldn’t even help you.

  21. HL Says:

    Bill,
I am not telling anyone to go die for my country except armchair war cheerleaders who think it is OK for others to die but would never fight themselves. (like Dick Cheney, and George Bush)
Oh and you say “you have no problem telling someone else to go and die”
So you are saying that anyone who goes over there will die? If that is the case then what are we doing there? You just admitted the war was a complete failure.
Thats the first thing you’ve said right. Congrats.

  22. Douglas Says:

I think Bill is saying that you are the kinda guy that can not fight his own battles. he said nothing along the line that any one who goes will die. stop twisting what people say or reading more into it.

  23. Douglas Says:

i do believe that the actual quote was “HL you have no problem telling someone else to go and die for you why don’t you go die for your country” youd copy and paste all of it. If i can i know a smart boy like you can

  24. Bill Says:

    HL,
I see that you passed the class, Liberal Media 101, how to spin what someone says. No were in there did I say that the war is a complete failure. Nor did I say that if you go to Iraq you will die for sure. Anyone that has been in a war knows that there is a good chance that they may get killed. So you can try and twist what I say all you want but it wont work. And congrats on passing that media class.

  25. HL Says:

I take that as a compliment from the master of republican spin. Problem is most of what you say is not spin, it is outright lies.

  26. Bill Says:

that is why you delete it because you can’t prove it wrong. that is also why you have reverted to calling me names and tried to discredit everything I say and still haven’t. I am still waiting for your proof that we are stealing the oil from Iraq.

  27. Bob Says:

Hey Bill, OSAMA, OSAMA Isn’t he the one who attacked us? What are we really doing in IRAQ. I also love how you refer to our action in IRAQ as a way of “liberating” that country. Boy, with this success rate we should move to help the rest of the world!! My God, your devotion to a party blinds you from reality!! Get out of the party and start to develop your own beliefs based on what is really happening. Dont listen to the right or the left but instead take a look at the direction of where we are headed. Please stop using Republican talking points and base everything you say on what is really happening to Americans and the country as a whole.
