Victory for Freedom: Senate Repeals Part of Patriot Act

Senate limits Gonzales’ hiring authority

WASHINGTON – The Senate voted overwhelmingly Tuesday to end the Bush administration’s ability to unilaterally fill U.S. attorney vacancies as a backlash to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales’ firing of eight federal prosecutors.

Amid calls from lawmakers in both parties to resign, Gonzales got a morale boost with an early-morning call from President Bush, their first conversation since a week ago, when the president said he was unhappy with how the Justice Department handled the firings.

With a 94-2 vote, the Senate passed a bill that canceled a Justice Department-authored provision in the Patriot Act that had allowed the attorney general to appoint U.S. attorneys without Senate confirmation. Democrats say the Bush administration abused that authority when it fired the eight prosecutors and proposed replacing some with White House loyalists.

“If you politicize the prosecutors, you politicize everybody in the whole chain of law enforcement,” said Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (news, bio, voting

HLs Take
OK now they should go through the rest of the Patriot Act and repeal the other 98% of it that is total BS designed to give Bush total power over everyone and everything.

HL have you really read the Patriot Act? because everything that I have heard from you and the rest of the Libs there isn’t a one of you that has read it at all. There are provisions in the Patriot Act that protect the US people. You want them to repeal the Patriot Act and yet there are alot of parts to the Patriot Act that were voted into law long before the Patriot Act was written. So I guess you want them to get ride of all the laws that have been in affect for many years before Bush came into office.

  2. HL Says:

So you have read it then. Send me a link, I’d like to see that. Although I know its hundreds of pages long with lots of things stuck in the middle. Like the law that the Senate just struck down that took away thier power.

  3. Buzz Says:

So neither of you have read it…….that’s priceless.

    USA PATRIOT Act Titles
Title I: Enhancing Domestic Security against Terrorism
    Title II: Enhanced Surveillance Procedures
Title III: International Money Laundering Abatement and Anti-terrorist Financing Act of 2001
    Title IV: Protecting the border
Title V: Removing obstacles to investigating terrorism
Title VI: Providing for victims of terrorism, public safety officers and their families
Title VII: Increased information sharing for critical infrastructure protection
Title VIII: Strengthening the criminal laws against terrorism
    Title IX: Improved intelligence
    Title X: Miscellaneous

H.L. we could discuss the titles if you like. H.L. did you notice that most of the titles have to do with countering terrorism. Help me out here! Is there something wrong with that?? I mean, heck, if the patriot act enhanced domestic security against some of the hollywood liberals out there I could see your point! Yall seem to have drawn the admiration of Hugo Chavez so maybe the nation needs such protection! ha ha ha. I know your not a terrorist H.L. Your mind has just been TERRORIZED by sillyness! Lets get them terrorists yall!!!

  5. Bill Says:
